I've been really eyeing the PVS-4 units you folks have put out recently.  I've been wanting to set up a .223 bolt gun with a dedicated NV of reasonable price for the sole purpose of eliminating nuisance coyotes at 200 yards or less.

Having no experience with these particular devices, is that within the realm of capability of the Gen 2 units?  Understandable if extra IR illumination was required.

Since this is only going to be used at home/my property, the size/weight of a PVS-4 doesn't matter to me and the price for those beautiful refurbs is quite attractive.  As much as I would like a high quality clip-on, that's simply not in the budget currently.

So is 200 yards a stretch for a coyote sized target, with or without added illumination?  If so what would you consider a reasonable max range for that size target?

Thank you.

I would say, no, it's not really a stretch and 200 yards can be done with the gen 2 PVS-4. However, the key is using the IR illuminator in conjunction with the unit. Clarity is the only thing the gen 2 PVS-4 would lack at greater distances without an IR illuminator. Depending on the lighting (full moon/half moon/quarter moon/ stars only) you may not need an IR illuminator at some distances, at all.
