I see forum talk and some users posting up data cards on their tubes. I searched and never could tell what exactly is bad, good, or the baseline that is used to claim one is better than the other. I see this is equivalent to buying a natural diamond - same size but under a close inspection, some may have barely noticeable imperfections - but everything is above a baseline. Is the baseline military specification or? If possible, I believe information on data cards would be handy for new buyers of NV and how TNVC approaches this topic when inventory comes in (testing).
Thanks, Norm PS I feel like a 4 year old stuck in timeout waiting for my L3 PVS14 to arrive from TNVC. Oh my, how come 4 to 5 days feel so LONG, where is that brown truck |

Oh my, how come 4 to 5 days feel so LONG, where is that brown truck However the specs will give you an idea how well it perform. S/N above 21:1 is good. Above 26:1 is very good. This means you have a clear image. Photocathode - Above 1800 is good. Above 2000 is very good. Resolution - Almost always 64 lp/mm though sometimes higher. Pretty much standard. The next "step" up is 72 lp/mm. occasionally tubes test at this resolution. EBI - Below 2.5 is good. Tube specifications can be all over the place - however most modern tubes are exceptional performers and work well under starlight only conditions. It has to get very dark before the slight differences in tube specs makes a huge difference in practical use. A modern L3 PVS-14 from TNVC should perform exceptionally :) Regards David |

I got my ITT NVPVS-14 Pinnacle Night Enforcer from Vic and Teddy @ TNVC hand select:
NEPVS14-17 Luminous. 2224 Radiant. 250 Halo max. 0.94 EBI phot max. 0.93 2x10-6 fc (K) max. 70509 Resolution center min. 64 FOM. Max. 1785.6 Signal to Noise min. 27.9 Tested: JAN 12 2012 It is very clean and has a sharp presentation, even with the USGI 3X Magnifier out in front of it the images are sharp and clear. Don't know how it could really get any better than this? |

Quoted: Thanks...good to know. Excellent posts !!! I didn't realize TNVC had a hand select option ... I probably would have asked if I had known more at the time of purchase. Learning more after the fact ... kinda how it goes sometimes. Cheers, Norm Buying an AN/PVS-14 from TNVC is a little bit like buying candy... If you don't know what flavour you want, then it all tastes good anyway and it doesn't really matter what flavour they give you. But if you have a preference, then hand select will get you closer to that preference. Even if you don't have a preference, with hand-select you'll still get whatever Vic considers to be be a good choice in general, but either way, you're not going to get a lemon. And I'm pretty sure that Vic checks out every single NOD he sells before he ships it anyway. That's one of the benefits of buying from TNVC. No lemons. So if you didn't ask about Hand Select, don't stress about it too much. You'll still get an exceptional monocular that will do everything you need it to do. :) Regards David. |

Well, I got caught with UPS not making it on Friday (early delivery then flipped back to original ) - NV is setting just a few blocks from me - Monday, monday... I'll post my Data Card and then chime in with my experience in a separate thread (a to z on how I ended up with the PVS-14 from TNVC). I don't want to get too far off topic here. |

First, THANK YOU for the purchase... The reason you did not see a hand select on the L3 units is we do not offer one. On average we get more hand selects with the ITT Night Enforcers. This is NOT saying the L3 units are bad and David is correct, TNVC (well I PERSONALLY) look through EVERY NV unit that goes out the door and always will. The other big advantage why we sell so many ITT units is the factory 5 year warranty on the tube and 3 year on the system all with pre registered ITT shipping labels along with RMA tags included in the kit from ITT in case of any warranty issues. Vic S/N = 27:1 - That's the median for the Night Enforcers - Very good and exceeds threshold for Omni VI, VII and VIII. PC > 2200 - Very good. Excellent low-light performance. EBI = 1.3 - Acceptable for that PC sensitivity - About median. Halo = 0.98 inches? mm I think. Good PC/MCP spacing. Overall - A very good tube. For one of TNVC's lower cost options, you got about the same level of performance as their NE series. Very much a keeper. :) Regards David |

Those were the specs directly off the paper - halo was indeed 'in.'
From what I recall using in the past (memory lane) - PVS7 (likely Gen 2, don't know) while in the SD National Guard in the 90's and some experiences with 1st Gen Russian purchased around the same time.... This L3 PVS14 image was and is OUTSTANDING!!! There was some very minor black spots on the very outer image which I understood as normal prior to the purchase. Optics crystal clear too ... This put a grin on my face after a long work day |
