I've got a rifle with a CMMG 16incher, carbine gas system upper.

I just noticed tonight that the metal plate the hand guards mount to on the front wiggles. Not the delta ring area, the one near the FSB.

It slides around a little... resulting in the hand guards wobbling slightly.

It is not a major issue right now, but I was considering putting some railed hand guards on it... might not be good for consistency with lasers...

Basically just wondering if this is normal... it isn't a lot of wobble, just a few millimeters.

My Colt LE6920 has a little wiggle, yeah, not unusual.

ETA most the the M16s I had in the service had it too.

As you describe it, the slight wiggle at the handguard cap sounds normal to me too.  It's one of the reasons why people who want to mount optics at the handguard area use free-float rails.

If you end up free floating it, the handguard cap won't even be used, so you should be GTG.

How is free floating done? I have seen them before, I know what they are, don't know how they work.

Is it difficult to install a tube?

Thanks... very happy with your product, just making sure there wasn't an issue. Functions perfectly.

You take off the stock barrel nut/gas tube and secure the tube with a special barrel nut/retainer, put the gas tube back.

By itself not difficult if you have the tools to change a barrel as I do, but if you have a standard FSB, that part can be a bear, especially getting it back on straight, since it will have to be removed for most FF tubes.

If you're wanting a drop-in railed forearm, check out the YHM 2piece for $101shipped at BrightFlashlights in the industry section.  Install is just a matter of pulling back the delta ring, and replacing the handguards...which is sometimes easier said than done.  This is the route I'm taking with my CMMG.

If you're wanting to go free float, they have the YHM 1-piece tubes(regular and lightweight) too...but the install is harder.  You'll need a receiver vise block / armorer's wrench / pin punches, and there will be some work involved.  You won't be re-using that metal end cap, either leave the end of the new tube empty or buy an additional YHM end-cap for looks.  You'll have about $80-100 invested in tools(if you purchase new ones), as well as $100+/- for the tube itself.  The good thing with this route is that you can get extended length tubes, swap out your FSB with a low profile gas block, etc.
