Warning: complete novice question coming!

Does the profile of the barrel impact the ability of it to be threaded, or affect the length it could be cut? (And I'm assuming "profile" is the word I'm meaning to use).

I just received a Bison Armory 6.8 upper with a 16" barrel, and immediately thought about filing a Form 1 to cut it down to ~12", which will the holes of my QD mount just outside the rail. The barrel has a ridge on it, and then tapers down just inside the quadrail, like this:

I'm thinking it doesn't matter...as you're going to remove the barrel material anyway to cut the threads...but wanted to make sure before I spend my $200 for a tax stamp.

The second question is regarding the Cerakote finish. I know that won't stop you from cutting the barrel down, but in your experience will it cut it clean enough so the finish doesn't flake and/or so there's no bare metal ring between the finish and the QD mount?

Thanks!
Greg

as long as its bigger than the threads we are putting on it should be fine, The cerakote comes off pretty well, you MIGHT have a small 0.030" discolored ring just behind the shoulder.

That's definitely bearable. The whole barrel will be under the rail, so even if I had to paint it black, it would almost look like a shadow to the QD mount. I guess worst case is I send it to you, you look at it and determine it can't be done, and I'm just out the cost of shipping both ways.

Obviously the bore is the same even though the OD changes, right?  What minimum OD would I need to have 5/8-24 threads cut?

The description of the "Recon Profile" barrel says:

Recon Profile: Our Recon profile is the lighter of our two profiles. The profile is 0.75" diameter under the hand guard and at the journal at the gas port. The diameter steps down to 0.70" after the gas block journal. Near the muzzle, the diameter steps up to 0.75" and then back down to 0.72" in order to accommodate the collar for the Ops Inc 12th Model silencer.

With 5/8 = .625, doesn't that mean I'm good with the barrel ranging between .70-.75?

Yes, as long as your barrel is above .625" in the area to be threaded, it can be threaded 5/8 x 24.
