I wonder if a cheap Sous vide cooker like the one at the link would keep the water at a more constant temp for dyeing bigger batches?

I know that this isn't a magpul part, but since I wanted ODG keymod panels (that don't exist) I decided to dye my own using BCM FDE panels. 2:5 dark brown to dark green. No fixed time or temperature. Set to simmer.
Maybe I'm challenged, but what's the formula for the ODG again? Is it 2 caps of dark brown and 3 caps of dark green? Looks great |

Surprised no one has tried multi-color dying.
I wonder how much bleed there is if you only submerged one half (top or bottom) in a color. Does it only die the submerged area or does it bleed into the rest of the mag? Also, has anyone tried bleaching a factory black mag? |

anyone have any suggestions for starting out with an already bright white part?
I have some Sig mods that come white ready for dye. just not sure if the recipes would create a darker version compared to dying an already sand mag since its a touch darker already. thanks |

Black won't dye. You might could get a darker purple (almost plum colored) if you use FDE, but I would test something small like a grip first to be safe. |

Well I’m a dumb azz and just bought a new Magpul SL stock in OD Green. Everything about my Seekins SP15 is black. I wouldn’t have minding if it was gray, but green is a no go for me. Issues just going to black? I see a lot of references to the synth version, just wondering any issues going of OD Green to black or are there any other options? It’s already pretty dark green so I suspect black is my only go to. Figured I would ask since I have seen the liquid black and then also saw the graphite synth version which might be cool, but I can’t live with the green coming through. Lesson learned, pay closer attention lol. Thanks! Tom |

So I’m going to try the dye the MOE stock and grip purple, and some Larue index clips that are also pink. Might try to dye some clean Lancer mags purple while I’m at it. Do I need to disassemble the MOE stock or can I dunk the whole thing in the dye mix? |

Just be sure you can get all the water out of places where it could rust the metal components. |

I got the pink LaRue index clips so today was the day for the purple dye project. This is for an AR I'm building for my wife. Her favorite color is purple, and she's active with the "Well Armed Woman" group, and their stuff is purple ... perfect. She's not around today, I used my propane grill anyway so as not to incur her wrath if I managed to spill purple dye on her hardwood floors . I started with the pot about half full of hot tap water. It took forever to get hot on the grill, and never did boil. I used a meat thermometer and decided to go for it at 190-195 degrees. I wasn't sure I'd be able to fish out all the small index clip so I used a plastic mesh produce bag for all the small Larue parts. I didn't take the MOE stock apart completely, but I did remove the black plastic buttplate. Here's my setup. The flat pan is my rinse water. I bought the stainless pot and rinse pan at a thrift store, $6 total.  I started with a pink Magpul MOE stock and grip. The pics don’t show it but the Magpul pink and Larue pink were very close. I laid out all the pink parts and gave them a shot of carb cleaner just in case of any oils. I used RIT Royal Purple synthetic dye. You can see the small parts in the mesh bag.  Dropping the plastic in really cooled down the mix in the pot, even though I left the grill on high. It was reading around 170. I was hoping for a darker purple, and ended up leaving everything in for 12 minutes. I was able to get the temp back over 180 and called it good. This is everything out of the pot, rinsed and laid out to dry.  And this is the final color once everything was dry. I put everything in a Box in front of a hot air register, to get it thoroughly dry. Should give a good idea of the final color.  Other than the low temp, it went fine. I can’t say for sure that the purple got any darker after 5 minutes. A very small area behind the stock adjustment lever was still pink, I was able to depress the lever with my tongs and the pink was gone pretty quickly. I hope she likes the finished product. I’ll post pics here once I have the build complete. |
