I remember reading awhile ago that you guys are going to switch from phosphate coating the ASAP to a melonite finish like on your other products. I haven't heard whether or not this actually came to be.

their website still says phosphate

from magpul specs:

  • Solid cast steel plate

  • Durable welded link ring

  • Mil-spec black manganese phosphate finish

  • Works with both mil-spec and commercial-spec carbine receiver extensions

While their website still says phosphate, the ASAP I received in the last month is definitely a different finish than the ASAP I bought several years ago.  The old ASAP is a grey-ish color while the most recent ASAP is blacker and has a crystaline appearance to the finish.

edit: difference in appearance only?

I think the website has out dated information. I will check, but I am pretty sure ASAPs have been melonite coated for some time now.

Both of these lowers are identical from the same mfg, with sequential serial numbers.  The older ASAP appears to be Colt grey-ish and is on the lower with the FDE CTR.  The newer ASAP appears more black and is on the lower with the black CTR.  The "specks" on the newer ASAP are actually light reflections from the crystaline finish.

I have 3 and they are a mix of the above pics as well. The newest being a crusty/crystal finish.
