I'm looking to customize my rifle a bit.  I'm pretty much sold on the AFG, so no real need to discuss that.  The whole reason I bought the XCR was for the caliber conversion to 7.62x39.  So I'm looking to upgrade my grip and stock to fit my long gorilla arms and meaty mitts, and at the same time add some storage for the conversion.  Between the two, I need to find room for the bolt, brass deflector, 1/4 allen wrench and one of those plastic Magpul bullets.  I'm thinking the ACS stock will hold everything but the bolt (perhaps gluing a patch of foam inside to keep the noise down).  I've seen a core for the MIAD grip that will hold a bolt, BUT...that's an AR bolt.  The XCR uses something much more akin to an AK bolt.  Anyone know if I could fit an XCR bolt in the MIAD grip?  I'm also a little concerned that the ACS stock may be real bulky, but it's hard to tell from pictures on a computer screen.  Or if there's other options I hadn't considered, please feel free to enlighten me.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

(side note:  I probably would've held out for an ACR if it would do the conversion without needing a seperate lower.  I know, it's not your a Magpul product per se anymore, it's BMs now.  The ACR is a sexy girl, but I had to choose function over form)

Buddy,
Here's my 7.62x39 XCR I bought (instead of an ACR because of the whole fiasco) and tricked out with Magpul gear:

I don't have the bolt holder MIAD core but I just tried a test fit of the 7.62x39 bolt in the MIAD. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit. Not because of the width of the bolt but actually because it is too long, even with no core insert.

Also, if you prefer the largest backstrap on the MIAD, it might need a little massaging to lock in place, mine did. Nothing a little filing on the plastic can't fix though.

Hope that helps!

Ryan, thanks for the try.  I greatly appreciate the info.  I suspect I won't be able to find ample enough storage for my wants.  I forgot to measure my bolt face tonight...my last hope was that it might fit in the battery storage cheekweld pieces of the ACS.  But I think the bolt lugs are just too big.  A VFG might be able to store the bolt, but I didn't like the feel of them on my buddy's MSAR E-4 and M&P15.  They're probably great for room clearing, CQB stuff, but I have no such plans in the near future.

Side notes:  That's a real nice looking set-up you got going.  Is that sling point part of the buffer tube adapter kit?  And is that a swivel mount too?  Also, is that a pinned 14" barrel?  If so, do you feel you made any sacrifices by going 14" instead of 16"?  I was thinking about doing a 14" pinned to 16" for my conversion to 7.62x39.

Wait, what about the buffer tube?  Is the open tube visible with the adapter folded, or does the adapter cover the open end?  If it's open, I could make a foam insert to keep it from knocking around and making a racket.  Please advise.

Not a problem. The ACS is supposed to be able to hold 2 AA or 3 CR123s. I just compared the bolt to both and it is just about that exact length. Not sure how wide the battery openings are but length wise, it would be an exact fit.

As for a VFG, I'd see if there isn't someone that could let you mount one up to your XCR. It might feel completely different on an MSAR than an XCR (maybe not the M&P though). I can tell you, I love my GripPod! It might also matter how you grip it. I don't wrap my whole hand around it. I hold mine with my palm on the front of the grip and my thumb parallel to the grip panels on the charging handle side rails. This lets my use my thumb to quickly hit the light's tail switch.

Thanks!

Is that sling point part of the buffer tube adapter kit?

Yes, that is a feature on the new XCRs.

Yep. Had to buy it separate though. Would have been nice if RobArm had included one.

Nope. It is a full size 16". Though it adds weight, I do like that it is a heavy profile barrel. I am planning on going SBR eventually and picking up a 12" barrel. Also going to get the 16" 5.56 kit at some point too.

As far as I know, when ordering from RobArm, the only 2 options for 7.62x39 are the 16" and 12". They might offer a 14" but I didn't see it on their site. Otherwise, if you want a 14", you might have to go with the 16" and get someone to cut it down.

I have the folding adapter and the buffer tube is completely closed by it.

One big word of warning that I don't know applies to the ACS or not. I ran into a slight problem mounting my UBR to the folding adapter and it could present the same problem on the non-folding adapter.

See this part of the UBR:

That is what it uses to lock into place on an AR to keep the whole stock from rotating round the buffer tube. The XCR's folding adapter lacks an opening to accommodate this "nub". As a result, no matter how tight I made the rear buffer tube screw, if I put too much pressure on the stock the entire stock it would rotate. The hex screws on the cheek piece were no help either because they were just too short to put any grip on the tube. The tube itself was, however, perfectly secured by the locking screw on the adapter and not in any danger of turning (I checked this without the stock on it).

My solution was pretty straightforward since the XCR doesn't need the buffer tube to accommodate the spring and bolt like an AR would. First, I removed the hex screws that hold the cheek piece on. I then made sure the cheek piece was perfectly straight when mounted to the rifle and tightened down as best I could using the rear screw. Then I used the cheek piece as a guide and drilled holes into the buffer tube. I found some fairly short screws (I don't recall the exact length), painted them tan, and ran the screws through the cheek piece and into the buffer tube. These 4 screws and the rear screw now keep the stock from rotating on the buffer tube and the locking screw on the adapter keeps the buffer tube secure.

Just something to keep an eye on!
