I have a VLTOR CASV rail system on my rifle. When I put my MBUS on do the need to be on the same level (i.e. pic one) or should the back sight be on the upper receiver itself (i.e. pic 2). When put on the same level the I feel like I have to put my head in a different spot than I do on my service rifle. When it is lower it feels more natural but I wasn't sure how that would affect zeroing it. Thanks.

Magpul has stated several times that the MBUS front should not ever be mouted on a gas rail due to heat issues.  If you to a lot of rapid fire or automatic fire, the gas block can reach a tempurature that can melt or warp your sight, degrading accuracy.

Huh?  He doesn't have it on a gas block...

and to the OP, yes it should be on the same level.  It feels different because it is raising the entire sight line up by 1/2" (or whatever) compared to where it is on you service rifle.  If you were using the CASV with a standard front sight base, you would want the rear sight down on the receiver rail, not on the CASV.  Since you have the front sight on the CASV, it is raising the sight line in front, needs to be raised in back also.

EDIT... oh wait, maybe he does... I just noticed that I don't see any pics of the CASV with the rail going all the way forward.  Hard to tell from the pics.

Is that a tall railed gas block in front?  If so, then take imortal's advice and move your front sight back on to the CASV rail.

No, its a separate piece or rail on the hand guard, not a gas block.

OK, that is what I thought first, but then it was hard to tell since CASVs have that cut out at the front.  Sounds like you are all set.  Good looking set up you have there, btw.

top pic is right. no that's not the gas block. yes the MBUSs need to be on the same plane, otherwise you would have serious elevation issues down range.

Is that a YHM spacer on the upper receiver in the top pic? is it level with the CASV? how do you like it? and how do you like the CASV? is it heavy?

It is a YHM space, it is just a tiny bit higher than the CASV but not so much that you cant slide the MBUS back onto with a tiny bit of force. As of right now I am happy with the arrangement even if it does look slightly ghetto rigged. Once I have a range trip with it we will see. I might have it milled down to match sometime. I love the VCAS, the modularity is great and it look great, sets the rifle off from all the other ARs out there. Its not too heavy for me, Im not sure of the weight difference between other rails and the VCAS but it does work great.

Can you put the cross bolt in the rear MBUS when it is on the upper receiver, I am thinking about getting the CASV and getting the VLTOR front sight with it, so the same plane would be off of the upper receiver and not the raised CASV rail.
