I just bought a FDE Magpul PMAG non-windowed, dated 11/07. I went to the range today to make sure my irons and Aimpoint were zeroed after being bumped around and removed.

The bolt hold open did not engage after firing the last round in the mag. I repeated this twice with single rounds and each time it failed to hold open.

This is the only mag of mine that this happens with. My 3 USGI ALuminum 30 rounders hold open, as do my cheap off brand 30 rounders, and 2 steel 20 rounders.

Lower is a RRA, upper is RRA, barrel is Oly Arms, BC/B assy is Denny's enhanced (shrouded bolt).

Any clue what would cause this problem?

I am not an expert, but it's possible you got a bad one. Magpuls customer service is excellent. Contact them directly, they will exchange it for a new one, more than likely.

Remove the upper receiver and check and see if the bolt hold open is being activated on an empty mag. Either the spring is not pusing the hold open up quick (or far) enough or it is not touching at all. This will help id the problem.

Ok, I separated upper from lower, and for the most part the mag will trip the bolt hold open with no rounds in the mag.

There was once when putting the mag in that it seems the follower tipped forward just enough for the bolt catch to not engage.  Every other time with just the lower and an empty mag it caught.

I mated the upper to the lower again, and cycled with an empty mag.  The bolt catch caught every time with an empty mag.

At the range yesterday the only times it would not catch was after the last round extracted.

ETA:

After checking again, it seems with the hammer back my bolt catch is moving back just enough to allow the follower to miss engaging it sometimes.

It seems to be very intermittent.

I may try picking up an extra bolt catch and see if it's just a tolerance issue with the catch  .

I've had the same problem with HK mags. Work the bolt release and then lube it until it becomes smoother. That should help the problem.

Mine does the same thing.  I think that when a round is actually stripped from the mag during the feeding cycle, it pushes the follower forward a little in the tube, allowing it to miss the bolt catch.  This is on one of my RRA lowers that has been fine with GI, C Products and even USA Magazines nasty cheapo mags.

OK, good to know it's not just my RRA lower doing it.

I'm going to see about picking up a new bolt catch this week or this weekend at the gunshow.

I will update after I swap it out and let you guys know if that fixes the issue.

I did get a chance to compare my lower/bolt catch with a friends Bushy lower/catch.
I noticed the RRA catch is off center when the catch is pressed down on the mag follower, while the Bushmaster catch is dead center on the follower when it is depressed.

Oh well, it's going to be a range mag until I get the issue fixed, or get a Masada :D
