The Masada has gotten my interest. My only question at this time is what advantages it has over the AR-15 design. Of course there is the piston operating system. That can be had with POF and a couple other companies. Why pick a Masada over an AR-based design? (And I do want a Masada! I'm just looking for more info!) |

-quick change barrel system -quick change stock system -quick change handguard system -steel on steel operating system (bearing surfaces for bolt carrier) -LOP and cheek height adjustments in stock (stock also folds, but that may or may not be an advantage) -ambi everything (charging handle, bolt release, mag release) -better control layout (especially the bolt release and charging handle) -designed from the get-go for multi-caliber support (5.56, 6.5, 6.8, 7.62x39 are under development or consideration) -serialized part is upper, so swapping out calibers is easy and requires no FFL (meaning you can go to calibers with different pattern mags) Pretty much all this stuff is available for ARs, but not in as well integrated a package. The POFs in particular have a railed handguard system that puts optics too high, sort of like the old ARMS SIR. Combine a piston driven MRP upper with an MGI caliber-change lower (with ambi parts) and you're pretty darn close to a Masada, but without some of the cool bits like the stock and the steel operating system bearing surfaces. What would I like to see? -.22LR adapter kit/dedicated barrel and bolt -swappable pistol grip inserts -armorer-install barrel adapter kit to put piston and gas block onto any standard AR barrel (what if I want to use a 1:8 twist barrel with a Wylde chamber, or a 1:11 4-groove 6.8SPC barrel?) -a steady supply of replacement parts (this is the one huge advantage of the AR - you can get parts very quickly from a multitude of vendors - to be fair, though, the Masada lower does use a standard AR FCG) I'm no expert and don't work for or with Magpul, so please, chime in if you have more or better info! |
