Hi all,

I just got back from shooting the first 20 rounds with my new Delton midlength build and am having cycling problems. The lower is Stag arms. First few rounds cycled fine loaded one by one, but when I loaded 5 and ran them through in succession the spent round didn't eject after extraction and jammed the chamber when the following round tried to feed. This happened twice before I decided to go back to loading one by one, this time the the bold would stop on the bolt catch and the round would extract but not eject. I left after 20 rounds frustrated and worried that I had set it up wrong (which doesn't seem to be the case). What am I doing wrong, is the bolt short stroking? The ejector and extractor spring should be fine seeing as the upper is brand new. Should I have run a few hundred rounds through it before I come hear asking for advice? I was using Remington UMC 55 Gr.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'll start.  Soak the BCG in CLP or a similar lube.  Take out the mag, make sure gun is empty.  Work the action 25 times or so.

Try it again.  Use a different magazine if you have one.  Give it a couple of full mags before you declare the gun hosed up.

Plan B.  Get some XM193 or similar full power 5.56 ammo.  UMC is a little wimpy.

Chances are your gun just needs a little break-in.

I had the exact same problem with my Del-Ton kit when i got it, where it would extract the round just out of the chamber but not eject out of the gun.  I tried everything I could think of figuring something was binding up but nothing helped.  I finally just ordered a new extractor spring (a heavy duty one) and it solved the problem.  When I compared the springs,  the original was about half the length of the new one.  I haven't had a single problem since(200-300 rounds).  Hope that helps!

Just ran about 200 rounds through the AR this weekend and only had a few jams. I soaked the bolt and carrier in cleaner overnight and got some 5.56 NATO spec ammo. I'm pretty sure it was the 5.56 that did the trick but I did get a new ejector spring so I'm going to put that in and try to get it to reliably cycle cheaper .223 ammo. Thanks for everyones help.

This worked very well for me. Shot my M4 build a couple of days ago for the first time without a single jam.

+1 to this.

My Del Ton had the same problem as yours when I first bought it and I shoot mainly UMC. I bought an extractor spring upgrade and have been running smooth ever since. Check your extractor for the blue insert. If it is blue (I believe all Del-Ton's are) then you should replace it anyway because its underpowered. Even the military has the black inserts standard on all new M4 and M16's.

If you continue to have problems, the AR-15 tech forum may get you better results, but here goes:

First, some rifles just need some time to break in. As mentioned earlier 50-100 rounds ought to be plenty. Degreasing and firing a few rounds without lube can help the parts wear in to eachother more quickly. Most firearms don't actually require lube to function, the lube just slows wear.
Second, whether your rifle is working right or not, an extra power extractor spring is probably a good idea and if I were a betting man, I'd say this is the fix you need.
Next, whether your rifle is working right or not, you should check to be sure the gas key is properly staked. If it's not, whack it with a punch.
Magazines cause most of the issues encountered in self loading firearms. Try other mags. Preferably mags that are known to be reliable in other rifles.
Sometimes a heavier buffer can help but your issue doesn't seem to be one that would be solved by an "H" buffer or 9mm buffer.
Sometimes swapping bolt carrier groups, uppers, etc. with known reliable parts can help isolate the problem.
Most fixes are cheap or free and relatively simple. The price of a reduced cost kit like Del-Ton's is a bit of QC. You shouldn't have to come out of pocket for anything expensive and once you get your rifle running, it'll run like a clock.
Be patient and good luck.

My Del-Ton upper has never jammed.  Hopefully it's the wimpy ammo.

needs to be broke in.

I always clean them really well when i get them in.  they seem to have some sort of weird oil that is a little sticky on them when new.

had the same issue here,, it started happneing after 600 rounds.
also had some mild short cycle going.
i order extractor upgrade kit from bravo, and last night i noticed the gas key is loose. the staking was not holding it on at all.

so make sure its tight as well just to make sure. and get a extractor upgrade kit

Yes Laura, you need to post a picture of your rifle and yourself. How about a Del-Ton crew photo inside the new shop?
