based on your post before you edited it.......

No.  Most deployments are based upon the needs of the unit and the service.

Also, while nobody wants to get injured, if you are using the possibility of getting wounded as a deciding factor---seek employment somewhere else.

Another thing, I've heard several folks say that statistically Afghanistan is more dangerous than Iraq.

No.  You go where you are told.

There is an IED threat in Afghanistan as well.

You can enlist now and go to ROTC.  You serve now in a non-deployable capacity and later as an Officer for 3-4 years.

There is a chance that you will be wounded, and there is a smaller chance that you won't recover enough to be a cop.  You can still be a cop with some leg amputations, by the way.

Start weighing your options.

Or, you may luck out and spend a year in Baghdad, including mulitple runs down Route Irish, and come back with no extra holes, and get a job with the fuzz. I was lucky.

Or, you could already be a cop in the biggest department in the world, and get sent over, and get waxed by a sniper while helping Akmed the Haji learn to take back his own country.
