| I have been trying to join the air national guard here in MO. I want Security Forces 3P0X1. I had a DWI and an MIP and a marajuana possession charge. None felony and all were dropped because of an illegal search and the officer falsifying his report. I wasnt drunk had 2 beers but was 20 so "drunk". And my brother let his friend keep his pot in my car so his mom wouldnt find it. So guess who go stuck with the charges. So now trying to join up and do my patriotic duty and they wont let me join in SF because i had so many charges in one night nevermind that they were dismissed. So they want to either put me in Munitions (building NUCLEAR BOMBS) or structures (repairing the stealth hull of the stealth bombers) but i cant guard gates. Anybody else understand or have ideas? |

Let's get this straight. You are gonna be working on thermonuclear bombs, and/or their delivery systems, IN THE LAB, HANDS ON, but they won't let you guard the ENTRANCE to said lab? That's military thinking. Or maybe they dont have enough techie types. BTW if you DO get the jobs with the nukes and stuff, DON'T get friendly with the guards. If SHTF, it is their job to shoot you. |

Long post alert OK...You were arrested & charged with the offenses listed in the first sentence of your original post, but claim all charges were dropped? If this is the case then you should be able to enlist & be granted the MOS you desire to have provided you are qualified like everyone else that seeks what you seek whether they have been charged with the same misdeamor(s) or not. IMO & experience as a current leo & former SNCO in the Corps, it doesn't sound like your charges were dropped or adjudicated if the AF is denying you entrance into the MOS you mentioned. I could be wrong, but that's the way I know it to be, at least in the state I work for. Now, if your charges were really dropped, then a conviction will not appear on your criminal history (Triple III) or background check that your recruitor will request from the local PD or State Police when he/she is working your enlistment package. Dropped charges will also not show up on the court computor or public records in most cases. If they do, all anyone will be able to see if the history trail of your case, but it will state charges dropped or nulli prose or not convicted. I would suggest that you inquire of your local PD or nearest State Police/Highway Patrol post if they will allow you a copy of your Triple III. Many will & some charge for this, but it's usually a nominal fee. Worth it in your situation & you should try. Actually, if you have an attorney then he/she should already have this info. Next, check with your prosecutor or request a meeting with your judge & ask if there was a condition of your case requiring that you, for example, had to do probation or victim impact panel & then your charges would be dropped off record after completion of such. If any of the above are actually the case & your recruitor is denying you the MOS because of criminal history on record, then there may have been a clerical error on the part of the court or your particular case was entered incorrectly on record. If this is the case then you will need to get with your attorney & prosecutor to make sure the errors are corrected so you can get on with your life. Entering the mil is a good thing for many, however, the mil wants people of good character these days & for good reason. Not to say that having been arrested/charged/convicted of minor crimes should keep one from enlisting as long as they have completed the conditions of their sentence. But, these folks sometimes aren't allowed into certain MOS's due to a previouse lack of good judgement or poor character traits that don't mesh well in an MOS where you have authoriy over others of higher ranks, i.e., MP or Security Police. On a side note: intoxicated is intoxicated regardless of your age. No need to try to rationalize it by stating you were just because you were a 20y/o & thus "drunk" in the eyes of the law, but then you weren't because you only had "2 beers". That is character related & leo's deal with this all the time, especially the "I only had 2 beers" or "the pot isn't mine" statement. I'm not judging you, but it is kind of a blanket statement when we deal with an OWI/PI/Poss of MJ situations. If you are in possession or have control of a vehicle where these situations apply, then you can be charged with these violations even if only in constructive possession whether you are aware of the contraband or not, i.e., your pal stuffs the dope under your seat after getting pulled over on a traffic stop. However, most folks are aware of these things, but allow it to happen nonetheless. That's all it takes for a charge to stick. Now a jury may be convinced otherwise, but it doesn't sound like that was the case in your situation as you've described it. Good luck. |
| My recruiter told me that its not that the charges were dropped (i was totally honest about them even though they wouldnt show up on a background check) its just that i had so many charges in one night. Yes SF is SP is AP. The judge thought that the arresting officer handled the situation improperly and they basically had no case. I have nothing against LEOs i am actually trying to eventually become one. I know that there are good cops out there, this just wasnt one of them. That night has actually inspired me to want to join law enforcement and point myself in the right direction and to get to civilian law enforcement a military background can look awesome and i want the best because i know its tough to become a cop. I know SF is more than just guarding gates thats just a way that one SFer i know put it |

The answer about all the charges in one night being the reason you are denied the MOS you want makes me raise an eyebrow. That sounds fishy. If as stated, all these charges were for a one time event. That doesn't sound like a character flaw. Maybe the recuriter has been given an operational mission to fill certain MOSs first. |

I wonder if your recruitor just doesn't like you? I can't see him telling you you are not allowed into this MOS or that MOS because you had X amount of charges in one day even when the charges were dropped. I may have been charged with violating a statute & very well may have been found guilty should the case have stuck & gone to trial, but if there is was no case & thus no conviction to hang over your head. Unless the USAF or ANG in your state has a policy of holding "what if convictions" over ones head...I dunno. There are a lot of USAF & ANG types that visit this site that can advise you better than me on that. I can only speak for my dept so take this with a grain of salt. We like prior mil & prior mil with college over any other qualification. Having said that, we have hired more non-MP prior mil types than we've hired prior mil applicants that were MP's. Not that MP's make bad civ cops, but it just hasn't worked out the best with the ones we've hired. My best friend is a former Marine Corps MP that spent his entire enlistment at a MCAS full of officers & jet mechanics & he seems to be working out ok I guess If you really want to be in military policing to build a foundation for future leo employment IMO prior MP experience really doesn't give you more of a leg up over coming out of another MOS. I would suggest exploring all your options within the different services. especially if you are not getting what you want from this ANG recruitor, provided you are otherwise qualified. If you really want to be an MP then by all means pursue that, but a combat arms MOS will prepare you better for civ leo work IMO. This is what I've seen in my area where we have 9 or 10 different LE agencies. We have more prior grunts wearing leo uniforms here than we do MP's. Maybe that's just coincidence & I'm certain it varies across the country. |
It sounds as though the RECRUITER is the one who is denying the opportunity to you, not the ANG. Find a new recruiter and ask them about it, being just as upfront. |
| If the ANG is like the ARNG, then the recruiters are usually assigned to a certain number of units and try to find people to fill those first. Go to the unit you want to join and see if there is a recruiter there, or if not, ask for the name and number of the recruiter that they work with. |
