Hi, I'm looking for any information or stories people can relate about changing ones MOS  mid-enlistment. I joined the Army with the intent of being as high speed as possible and being as close to the point of the spear as I could. I signed up 11X not realizing that that did not guarantee me a job as a rifleman and ended up an 11C in a low speed mortar section. I have been in a year already and I am going nuts with this. I am getting close to trying to get reclassed but am worried about the reaction from my chain of command. I am a good soldier, my platoon sergeant views me as kind of a golden boy, and I am worried about ending up stuck here with my leadership disliking me. I wouldn't want to leave on bad terms anyway. I am just looking for any advice or wisdom anyone can send my way on this. My goal is to try to go to SF selection as soon as I become eligible (E4). I also have an air assault school slot in about a month that I want to complete before I make any moves. Adam

All that I can offer you is that I have tried it in the past and it is very difficult - particularly if you are an asset to your unit.  I was unsuccessful in my bid to transfer to a Cav Scout unit about to deploy to Afghanistan, even though my unit had nothing going on at the time or in the near future.  They just didn't want to lose a non-flagged E6 with a valid security clearance, MOSQ'd, and a committed and motivated attitude.

As I understand it, if your chain of command doesn't want to let you go there is nothing you can do about it.

I've looked at this too as a 45B (smallarms repair) if you go to SFAS your unit can't stop you and if you make selection you belong to SF it's just a matter of time before your training starts. you won't even deploy to Iraq at that point. if you want to reclass you might look at BEAR MOS's at reenlistment time. those are short handed MOS's they realy need people in and will pull strings to get you. but you have to do it at reenlistment time or it's hard to get everyone to play ball sometimes. you can also reclas into any other MOS at that time but you would have to be in an MOS that's over sthrengh for them to let you go. How ever if you get it in your contract it's as good as gold and if they screw you got to JAG and fight it you'll have a decent chance at winning. hope this helps
