IF you are married before you goto basic and AIT you are authorized BAH. You are getting screwed and you need to resubmit the paperwork asap. If they keep giving you the run around contact the IGs office.

You should be getting BAH and BAS while she's in basic. It will be based on the zip code where YOU are living while she is in training.

If I remember right, BAH is based upon the rate at the PDS, which would be at recruit training, since the actual PDS may not have been determined.

There a way that the services can and often do get around paying BAH.  A long time ago when I was a Lt at The Basic School, they wouldn't give BAQ to student officers unless their dependent was in the Quantico area, they would give the at dependents rate differential (amount over BAQ self) until the spouse was there.  The reason for that was the Student Lt was required to live in the BOQ unless the spouse was there, so they didn't rate the BAQ other than the amount they would get for spouse.

BAS, if you mean Subsistence allowance/Comunited rations probably wouldn't be rated because you are eating at government messing facilities.  If a BAS/Comrats is given than the service member would be required to either get a payroll checkage or pay for each meal at the BAS rate.   The only exception is for officers who get BAS at all times to cover the cost of feed their horse.

Yep, you're right about BAS, forgot about that. But I'm pretty sure that BAH is rated on the ZIP code that the dependent is living in at the time.

Hell, I could be wrong about that too. I was wrong when I thought Pearl Jam was going to put out another good album after 10.

active duty Army BAH used to be based on Rank/grade.  In the Guard its based on zip.

It is both, different zips have different BAH and there is a variance  based upon grade and if the person has a dependent or not.  Also, for a reservist to rate BAH while on active duty they have to present either lease or mortgage, unlike active duty they may not rate BAH own right off the bat, and not all AD rate BAH own right either.  The only time I can think of that grade is the only determinate, and not zip, for an allowance is DLA computation.

It's at the PDS rate, when I was a Geo-bachelor I got paid at a much lower rate when I PCSed away from where my wife lived.

we did get BAH.  it is now based on zip code regardless of rank.  will not get BAS until she lives in quarters or off post.  thanks for all replies.

You should be getting BAH w/dependants, BAS, and possibly COLA depending on where you live (i.e. Hawaii, San Francisco, etc...)  Your wife needs to push this issue up her chain of command, do not go straight to IG or call congressmen or anything like that unless you want more undue hardships.

Only 1 member of a dual service couple gets BAH with dependents, the other gets BAH own right, normally it is the senior of the 2 since that would amount to a little more, BAS would not be given in recruit training because meals are given, the Government doesn't pay twice, COLA is computed in all CONUS location however, it normally equals zero for most of the US.

Really, I must have missed it.  But if that is the case than the spouse would rate the BAH deps, however I don't think BAS or INCONUS COLA is a player.

I am not sure if FSA would be applicable either since FSA starts at the 30 day mark away from the family, but  the stipulation is you have to be in separated from the family for from your PDS, since that hasn't been established yet I am not sure if it is a player.  This would be similar to a case of a geo-bacheleor, the governments position is that its not their fault your separated from the family.
