Gentlemen (and Ladies), Apologies to all and the mods if this is the wrong forum for this, but I figured you guys would be the best to know. My aunt just gave me as a family heirloom the US flag that was used in my grandfather's military funeral. He was a US Army WWII vet of the Italian campaign. He was a blue-collar, brass-balled, Polish-Catholic force of fury from Buffalo, NY. He did his duty, survived the war and returned to the states to raise a wonderful family but unfortunately pass away in the early 1970s at the age of 53 when I was but an infant. The flag is currently folded as per regs but in simple wrapping paper. I want to place this flag as well of photos of my grandfather in service as a display in a place of honor in my home. We have some great shots of him (includes his original "I am a Doughboy" brochure from BCT) , and as a soldier in-country during the campaign. I am trying to get as much info from my family as I can on what exactly he did. It looks like he was part of a mechanized unit and drove a Willys MB, but that's about it. Trying to get unit info and other details to make the the display as accurate as possible. In any case, would love to get any recommendations on vendors that build out nice display cases for flags and these types of memorials for family members. Thanks for any recommendations. |

You want something like these flag wave. I can't vouch for the site but you're looking for a display case like that. Since you're in NC, if you love close enough to either Camp Lejune or Ft. Bragg then you should be able to find any shop in the area that has more than a few of these.
As for finding out about his background while he was in you may be in a tough spot. Many records that were completed from the 1912 to 1964 (including much of the Army Air Corps since it was disbanded in 1949) were destroyed in a fire at the St. Louis Records Depository years ago. You might get lucky or you may not. Go to the US National Archives and Records website for more info |
