| My dad passed away and going through his military stuff I found something that I don't understand. In all his pics in Germany (In Country 1960-62) he has a 7th Army patch on his uniform and a 2nd ACR "Toujors Pret" pin on his epaulets and cover. His DD-214 Says "A-Troop, Second Recon Squadron,Second Armored Cavalry" was the unit he was in while in Bayreuth Germany. Was he attached to the Seventh Army or what? He said they were the Czechoslovakian border guard and was there when the Berlin Wall went up. |

not 100% sure, but all the info i can find says the 7th was the army command for germany during that time, so your fathers regiment would have been a subordinate command under them. not sure how patches and such were awarded/worn back then, but it dosnt seem too off the wall to me. even now you'll see 'mismatches' like that, unless youre at a particularly high-placed unit.
for example, when i joined the texas guard, it was the 49th armored. i was in division artillery, so my patch and crest were the same. guys in different bns wore the 49th patch, but different unit crests. now im in a medcom unit, and everyone in my 'battalion' wears the 807th medcom patch, which is 2 echelons higher, and a unique crest. |

Meh, when I was in Korea, I was in 3rd Squadron, 6th Cavalry regiment, which was under the operational control of 8th Army which ran Korea. We did not wear the 8th Army patch, but the Cavalry "Crossed Sabers", and later we wore the 2ID "Indianhead" patch when we were moved under them.
The point is that it happens. |
| NCMike, You are correct sir his DD-214 does say A-Troop, 1st Recon Squadron, Second Armored Cav. I made a typo.....Some how I typed 2nd Recon. When I was looking at pics of when he took basic at FT.Hood with the 2nd Armored Division, B-Company, 2nd Medium Tank Battalion, 35th Armor.....The pics in basic have him wearing the Second AD patch with a "HELL ON WHEELS" tab. Thanks for all the input guys......Trapfan. |

Quoted:
Patches can be whacky. I ran into an Army guy with a1st Marine Guadalcanal patch the other day. They were previously assigned with a USMC unit back in Iraq and were allowed to wear the patch. Straight out of AR 670-1. 28-17 (b) (14): "(14) Operation Iraqi Freedom: from 19 March 2003 to a date to be determined, for soldiers assigned to units participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Soldiers must have been deployed in the CENTCOM area of operations, or participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom while deployed in Turkey, Israel, and Aegis cruisers. Soldiers who served with the 1st Marine Division from 19 March 2003 to 21 April 2003 during combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom are authorized to wear the 1st Marine Division shoulder sleeve insignia as their SSI-FWTS..." i wear the 2mardiv patch (al anbar 50-06) . its authorized, but 1mardiv's in the books because it set the precedent. |
