Im going to Camp Robinson on Apr the 3 for SAMG and was wondering if anyone else has been through the course recently...I have done the SDM course there about a month and a half ago, and it was very informative and hands on, but very little classroom time..
Is SAMG more book/classtime oriented or more range oriented? |

I took the SAMG course last year. The first week it mainly all classroom oriented with LOTS of PowerPoint's!!! The class is split up into different teams that are to teach the rest of the class about a certain weapon system––M9 pistol up through the MK-19. The last 2-3 hours of each day is spent becoming intimately familiar with your assigned team weapon. There was some range time the 2nd week just firing for familiarization.
I myself am currently trying to request the SDM course there this June. |
| Last poster was pretty much spot on. The point of the course is to familiarize you with finding range regs, setting up and running ranges, with all the little things you need to take into consideration to run one successfully. Lots of classroom time early on, lots of hands on time with the weapons, and the second week each team runs a range for their weapon, with all the other teams firing the range. Pretty good course, but not a marksman course by any means. |

Roger that. My HQ is trying to get me to take an additional 2 weeks to attend an unstable gunnery platform course in late April in prep for our2 weeks of AT in August. I would really like the SDM course instead. I ran it by the fiancée today and I think she NO-GOd the unstable gunnery course in April, still crossing my fingers for SDM.
We are already having staffing level problems at my civilian job so "EXTRA" time off for .mil leave not be a good idea. SAMG course: In order to test off on each weapon system we obviously had to disassemble, reassemble, function check, load and unload each system. We also had to be able to recite the specs of each system and recite and explain the best you could the cycles of function of each system. THIS is where I had my hang-ups as my mind had trouble visualizing all the inner actions. Also, if you are able to buy some tshirts at the end of the course I would like a 2X short sleeve. The instructors told us not to buy them too big but mine shrunk a little in the dryer and aren't as loose as I prefer. Let me know and I'll send you money!!! Good Luck!! |
