You commonly hear things like "It's always good to get guns off the street".
I own a handgun, and I have considered carrying it concealed on certain occasions. I'm just your avg Joe Blow with an associate degree and no arrest record. If I walk down the street to a neighbors house or the grocery store and I get stopped and arrested (I know this wouldn't happen if I didn't do anything wrong, but go with me on this) would the officers high five each other after the arrest and talk about how they feel good about getting another gun off the street? I'm thinking it's more like when a known criminal (or gang member or otherwise obvious piece of shit) is caught carrying. I wanted to clarify because the public hears it all the time from LEOs and as a gun owner in California and someone who would like the ability to carry concealed, it kinda doesn't help my cause. Here you have to get the permission of the county Sheriff himself to obtain a CCW permit. Believe me, I asked. He asked me why I needed the permit and I told him because it's my right as a law abiding citizen. I was denied. ETA: I do have my permit for the state of Florida, but it's not valid here of course. |

But he is still commiting a crime (not to me, but I don't enforce the law), so it is not worth going to prison. Even in Florida, where we have very gun friendly laws, concealed carry of a firearm is a felony, without a permit to do so. Chicken shit in my opinion, but why take that chance. |

OP, in answer to question about all the atta-boys and congratulations, no we don't do all that crap on-scene. It makes us look like tools to the public, and we're normally either a) still being recorded on camera, b) writing tickets/reports, or c) tying up loose ends. There's just no time or need for it.
Now back at the station, in private, do we talk and laugh about it? Of course. Like someone else said, stop watching so many cable TV cop shows. To a real cop, those shows are training aids on what NOT to do. |

See, that makes no sense at all. In California, I can go to jail for a misdemeaner charge of carrying a pistol, and serve less than a year in prison. With California having some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country. Now, Florida, on the other side of the country, has some of the most lenient gun laws in the country, but if caught with a concealed firearm, it is a felony punishable up to five years in prison. Strange laws we have in the US. |

I stopped watching this or that network because of the anti-gun tone of the shows they showed........such as when they would show a cop show where the cops come to the door, knock, say they were the gas company and when the person comes to the door armed, bust him up. Now, maybe in the story, he was a wanted felon, but still, that message of the police saying one thing and someone taking precautions in a bad neighborhood and being busted up about it.....IRKS me. (especially if one knows the case history of General Dozier) Now, for a moment, what is referred to above is sort of in line with the kind of research I've done in the past which was based off the research of another. In the latter case, it was that people watch a medical show and they build an impression of this or that person to how they are overall. When they meet such a person in real life, the tv impression is not replaced but rather, it is blended so what they don't know about the person in real life, the tv impression fills in. Hence, for instance, they may assume that the woman doctor is young, beautiful, and sleeps around a lot! What can I say? That's how we show entertainment and it is perhaps unfortunate that people start believing that way. As far as guns and beliefs go, well it is probably fair to say that they vary from person to person and region to region........such as with people who stop watching TV because of what is being shown. ___________________________________________________ (After hyping up how important nursing is and then learning that fellow nurse Abby Lockhart is a medical student as well. For the most part I stopped watching it years ago. We'll talk about a call at the dept eventually, but if we are arresting someone, they are a bad guy and have put themselves in that situation and caused their arrest through their actions. If its simply a guy in possession of a weapon without a permit, there are a ton of options available to us that dont go so far as an arrest, and those are the options I see officers making if they feel the person is otherwise law abiding. |

I've learned that how gun friendly Officers are depends heavily on the area of the country you are in. If Officers are hired from a pool of people that are anti-gun (California), they will most likely be anti-gun. If Officers are hired from a pool of people that are pro-gun (Indiana), they will most likely be pro-gun. Not every Officer that comes across a seemingly decent citizen with a gun will arrest that person, but there is certainly no guarentee. If you are in violation of the law, whether you agree with it or not, you can be arrested.
One thing that makes using discretion with regards to any weapons offense, especially gun offenses, is that if an Officer lets someone go and that person later shoots his girlfriend in a domestic or robs a convenience store, that Officer and his department will lose their ass in a civil suit. It is the same as if an Officer let a DUI suspect go and he t-boned a car on his way home, killing someone. If we let a person go that is violating the law, we can be held at least partially responsible for their actions related to that offense later. I don't arrest every person I come into contact with that I can legally arrest. Most Officers don't. Just don't be surprised if you get stopped by an Officer that isn't willing to bet his job, his house, and his future that you won't commit a crime with the weapon after he lets you go. After all, he will only have the few minutes you speak with him to form an opinion. |

I agree with the idea that the local environment/hiring pool has a lot to do with how CCW is viewed.
My dept. was in the southern Central Valley in CA where I grew up - very conservative. This will sound unfair as hell, but I cannot recall how many people I contacted over the years that were CCW without a permit and I did absolutely nothing about it. Even working midnights as I always did, I saw no reason if they were otherwise squared away. Guys doing well logging and traveling from one oil patch to another, a father doing a midnight run for diapers or formula, others traveling for normal purposes at unusual hours....if they weren't a shithead involved in actual capering, I'd make them unload (with the admonition to reload after I left them) and send them on their way. Yes, that's not what the law says, but there's also some statutory language about prosecutorial discretion, too. Almost everybody, including up to the Chief, was a big supporter of 2A rights and our city and county issued tons of CCW permits. We also had an outstanding reputation for shooting almost as many felons as our citizens did. However, CA Health and Safety Code Section 11550(E) made a lot of arrests for me and others - it makes it a felony to be under controlled substance influence while in personal possession of a loaded firearm. Hooked many, many tweakers for that over the years. My friends at LAPD had to work around many coppers of a more liberal tint, who probably masturbated over ANY gun seizure. But, that's LA....100 miles south of, and light years away from, common sense. |
| When I worked the lower 9th ward (shithole among shitholes,) I carried a bunch of LA CCW pamphlets with me––-otherwise squared away folk got a brief lecture on the laws regarding open carry being legal, and a pamphlet describing the process to acquire a concealed carry permit. |
