Anybody a part of this organization.
I have been thinking of applying with them. An aquentance of mine works there and I will be asking him more about it next time I see him, but figured Id ask around here to get another opinion. |
| Depends, what are you looking to get out of it? Life long career? LE experience in one of the busiest places and move on? I have pretty near twenty years and can say it has been both great and not so great. I'm sure people with other departments and in other career fields would say the same. Management is a micro-managing nightmare right now (and I am a supervisor!!). The quality of the new applicants has been poor lately, that may change with the economic down turn. I can guarantee that unless you spent all your time as an inside person, you will experience things many others never will (or want to!!). It is different than a desk job for sure. Like I used to tell the new guys (and gals) no one came into your house and made you become a cop, you can always quit. So, you can always try it and leave if it's not what you want. Still looks decent on a resume. Good luck |

Starting pay is 25k. It's an insult to those hardworking men and women that they have to kill themselves working OT just to keep food on their table. |

Well I have been working toward a LE career since I was in high school. I know that LE is the career for me and I have known it since I was a toddler.
Things are tough right now, Im a Jersey guy and right now in Jersey if you dont have a Bachelors degree and PTC certification (putting yourself through the academy, which is hard to get into) you dont even have a shot at getting hired. I am still in school, Ill be getting my Assoc shortly, and Ill continue with my Bach after that. As far as what Id be looking for at NYPD, i dont know. Its definatly a good place to start, Im not a city lover though so I dont know. After a few years I may come accustomed to it. Also I figure once I start a career I dont want to transfer (unless Im completely miserable) in order to avoid any pension issues. As far as pay, Im under the understanding that pay had been increased. According to their site starting salary is 40 something thousand dollars. |

I make over $100k every year now at top pay, which isn't bad for a single guy like myself. The working environment has really gone downhill with all the micro-managing. Plus they're only putting in small academy classes right now with thousands of people in line for a job. Could take awhile to get hired. |

They pay isn't so bad now, but cost of living is still high in the city. But in order for that pay increase there was a cut to vacation days for new hires. And I think there is some other nonsense with new pension tiers going on now. |

You guys are way off on the pay situation. It's not the best, but we are finally somewhat cometative with other agencies. Recruits start off in the 30's, and top pay after 5 years in now closer to 90k. We almost have a living wage. One problem now is that classes are currently only hiring from the Cadet Corps, and are very small. I'm hoping something is done soon before our ranks become too small to handle the crime on NY. |

That is what I am currently doing (putting myself through an academy). How about places in PA? |

Wait until all the cops hired under "Safe City, Safe Streets" come up for retirement. Gonna be thousands of guys bailing at 20 years from all those huge academy classes from 1989-1993. |

Not that Im that worried about the money. Im probobly going to end up in PA, but who knows. What academy you going through? Good luck to you, I know several guys with bachelors who put themsleves through and are having no luck. One guy is working as a special 2, and he is lucky to have that job. I would push for Alt Route but I dont want to get stuck without a job and loose my cert afer 2 years. That would royally suck. Good luck to ya. BTW I hear Toms River is hiring if you have a 4 year |

But I know people who have graduated last and this year who still don't have jobs. Bad situation all around. |
