Holy crap....I just gave my final presentation at general instructor school and passed with flying colors. However this has been the biggest pain in the ass class I have ever taken. Writing lesson plans from scratch, in the correct format, is the most tedious task I have ever completed. We started class with 28 and we are now down to 15 because 3 failed a test and the others lesson plans weren't up to standard.

We do not have anything in a statewide sanctioned format as what it seems that you are describing.  However, I have been to a few general instructor development courses from some large LE sanctioning organizations, and numerous instructor level courses for a wide range of topics, from numerous schools.  In the old days, lesson plans were erratic and varied greatly.  Nowadays, while the content may vary, the format has become somewhat standardized, especially with the amount of sharing being done inter-agency and via the www.

While the lesson plans are a real pain, they are what is going to save you or hang you in court should you be called on as to what you did as an instructor.

I feel your pain.  I completed NC's back in January and it was probably the most stressful class I have taken.  It's 80hr but you complete your lesson plan on your own time as there is not really any class time for it so it was more like a 160hr class with all the time you spent working on the lesson plan.  Our test was 150 questions and you had to make a 80% to pass the class.  Not sure what format you use down in GA but NC uses the ISD model and it's a complete pain in the ass.

I've been wanting to do the GA instructor school for a while now, however my agency requires 5 years on and I only have 2.  Any advice for when I do get to take it??

Our POST instructors school was a bear. I actually had to pay attention.  I didn't mind the lesson plans, activities and presentations but the writing assignments (homework) didn't thrill me. It was college mid-terms all over again.. without the booze.

The only advice I can really give you is pick a broad topic which there is plenty of information about (ie stress relief, basic interviewing techniques, etc) and further simplify it by teaching one part of that braod topic, if that makes sense.

White64- As for firearms IT school it is no where in the immediate future, but hopefully within a year or two I can finish DT IT and FIREARMS IT.

GI (General Instructor) school was one of those rare times where I was thankful I had been forced to take public speaking in college.  That class was a total bastard, but very well worth it - I really enjoy teaching and spreading what little useful knowledge I have.
