DALLAS - A man posing as a military police officer duped police into thinking he was on a special FBI task force and went on calls with Dallas Police Department officers.

Armed with a gun and badge, Ryan Caskey, 21, posed as a military officer. Caskey even drove a Crown Victoria with red and blue flashing lights.

Once case in which he joined Dallas police on a call was to an apartment complex where a man was allegedly trying to break into an apartment to attack his ex-girlfriend.

"Police came and knocked down the door, about five cops came in," said the woman who called police.

While Caskey acted like a cop and had his gun out, even the victim said she thought there was something not right about him.

"My friend pointed out the other officers had on uniforms but he had on a vest and black T-shirt," she said. "The vest, I believe, said 'police' and he had on jeans. We thought it was weird because they all had on uniforms and he didn't have one."

Caskey was apparently a friend of a real officer; however the officer wasn't aware that Caskey was an imposter. The imposter told his friend he was military police and on a special assignment with the FBI.

"It wasn't until a sergeant who responded to a call asked him who he was and asked for identification and credentials, and that was the last we have seen of him," said Lt. Andy Harvey, Dallas Police Department.

All officers and federal agents who work with Dallas police have to get approval from higher-ups. Caskey was simply showing up on calls.

Dallas police said they are concerned a fake officer rode on calls with them and have launched an investigation.

Late Monday night, Dallas police filed charges of impersonating a police officer against Caskey. Also, DPD is looking into the possibility Caskey posed as an officer in other cities.

I can see how MP's might be working for the FBI, theres alot of interagency cooperation going on now days. Ive seen military CID guys who have desks and work in the ATF offices and all that.

What i dont get is how these local cops would believe that a military policeman would be answering local civillian calls.

Even jeans and a T-shirt with a tac vest isnt that improbable. We have a Tac unit here that rides around in unmarked cars and wears jeans, "Police" t-shirts, and Tac vests over that with a badge hanging on it. But then they dont run traffic stops. They assist the narcotics and major offenders unit and only check by on priority in progress type of calls.

I wish they'd taken a shaming picture of this one like the VA cop did to the last impersonator.

A Chesterfield County man is behind bars in Henrico County, charged with outfitting his personal vehicle as an emergency response vehicle.

According to State Police, 24-year-old Sir Frederick Mercado had been spotted several times by local and state law enforcement in his Ford Expedition using emergency flashers. The sightings began last summer, and continued until December 11, 2008 when he was arrested.

State Police officials said Mercado “sold” his Ford to “Virginia Patrol,” a fictitious company allegedly created by Mercado as a pretense to obtaining official emergency license plates.

- Mercado is (was?) also in my old National Guard unit... a bunch of my buddies told me about him and then I saw him on the news. What an idiot, this guy was riding up and down the beltway in Richmond (288) with lights on, driving back and forth. Finally a trooper dug a bit and ended up arresting him. All they had on him was misdemeanors, until they dug into the sale of the Ford to the ficticious company, they got him on a felony for filing a false DMV application for a title.
