So without going into too much detail and making this too long, I need to vent a little. A while ago, I came up with a schedule for our dept that I thought would be better than what we currently work. Right now it's 3 days on, 3days off, 3 nights on three nights off and so on. 12 hour shifts, 6 am to 6 pm. I was getting burned out on swithing from days to nights every week, and in a supervision class I went to someone told me about their schedule that everyone really liked. You were off every other fri sat sun, the hours were the same, and you still worked the same number of hours in a pay period. I talked to the people this would affect, and 19 out of 20 liked it. The lone dissenter was one of the shift supervisors.
I got everything together and presented it to our chief. He liked it and it was proposed at the supervisors meeting. Again, everyone thought it was good to go except that one guy. He had no specific reason he did not like it, he just thought it was bullshit. After a few weeks the chief announces that we are switching to the new schedule in May. Fast forward to today..... my supervisor, the same supervisor that told me to my face that he liked it and was on board, went to the chief and cried to him that this schedule would interfere with his second job. So now, 2 out of the 4 primary supervisors are against it, and it's been put on hold. I was so pissed I called my supervisor and asked him what the fuck?! Even now, he s too spineless to admit he fucked us all out of a better schedule. He is such a spineless bastard. I worked hard on this for 2 months, and now, after telling me it was all good, my own supervisor stabs me (and the rest of the dept) in the fucking back like the two faced little bitch he is. Now I just need to figure out how to go to work and not tell him how I feel, since I don't want to be written up. As a comparison, on our current schedule, from june 1 to dec 31 we have 4 weekends off. The new schedule would have us off 15 weekends durning the same time. |

I would be inclined to ask your supervisor where his loyalties lie. He's pissing on the new schedule because of his other job? WTF is up with that?
I know that a lot of us have to take off duty details and even second jobs, but he needs to decide whether his job or his career is more important. |
| we work what call call a long week, and a short week. pay is every 2 weeks. long week consists of work mon, tues, off wed, thurs, work fri, sat, sun. then it goes into your short, which consists of off mon, tues, work wed, thurs, off fri, sat, sun. repeat. 12 hour shifts, 7-7. |

See if you can find one of those LOYALTY posters and put it up in the supervisors room (if there is one). |

We do the exact same schedule... with the exception of one of those days is an 8 hr shift due to have exactly 80 hrs in a 2 week pay period. I love it. You get every other weekend off, AND if you want to go on vacation, you burn 2 days (Wed, Thur) and you get a whole week off. It's great. Gives a lot more time off to work a second job (which I do) so I couldn't see why your supervisor couldn't do the same. |

| My 22 years has left me with a realization of what a carnival of whores the brass are. I wrote a memo in 1982 (which I have saved) in an attempt to get our Dept. patrol rifles. You would have thought I was the antichrist. When they became standard for patrol years later, the Lt. who wrote it up was practically sainted. If you want to change things, you have to bide your time, eat shit, and play the "game". I got sick of the backstabbing and switched departments, and it only got worse. Good luck! |

This is exactly what I proposed, except we work 6-6. We all discussed this schedule for almost two months before this all happened, and he did not ever voice any concern. Then, after it's implemented, he goes crying to the chief. When I called him yesterday, he still insisted he wants what the department wants, and he did not intend to screw this up. "If you guys want this, then I want it too." So why even go talk to the chief??? Tonight is going to be interesting. |

Based on seniority you could try this schedule:
4 shifts total. 6p-6a or 6a6p. 2 days, 2 nights dayshift 1- off days-sun/mon/tues/every other wednesday. dayshift 2-off days-thu/fri/sat/every other wednesday. nightshift 1-off days-sun/mon/tues/every other saturday. nightshift 2-off days-wed/thur/fri/every other saturday. this equals 76 straight hours and 8 hours ot. 36 on a short and 48 on a long week. Your dept might go for the 'built in ot' if they are used to paying ot out all the time. this could actually save some money in the long run. This doesnt have to be permanent either. We have the oppurtunity to change days/shift every 6 months. |

Been there, done that, got the Tee shirt.
95% of people agree and someone is gonna cry. Crying over an extra job is lame. I get a case of the ass with people that think being the police is like working at WalMart or any other private business. If you did not know when you took the job that you would work odd hours and at times that were not on your personal schedule, you are too stupid to be the police. Get a frickin hair net and go work somewhere with a set schedule. These whiners piss me off. |

Update
Ok, so after a little back and forth, the new schedule is back on, and we start it on May 7. One of the original dissenters was just pissed that the chief didn't come to him personally to let him know what was going on and my supervisor actually told the chief that several others were against it too. Funny thing is, these people were and still are 100% for it, my supervisor just lied about it to try and strenthen his case against it. Of course, now, he won't own up to it at all.
Basically, the chief said "This is going forward. Out of 20 people that this will affect, 17 absolutely want it and that's what we are going to do. The other three can suck it up or find new jobs." I'm still pissed, but at least the schedule came though. |
| My department runs the exact shift rotation. It is 0600-1800 and so forth. The only complaint I have is we rotate days to nights every 30 days. by the time your body is getting use to nights, its shifted back to days. i wish we would run a bit longer or go to perm nights and days. You will always find someone to bitch. You could give them all 6 days off and have them call in on the 7th (instead of coming in to work) and someone will bitch about having to call in. It never fails to amaze me... Good luck.. |
| We transitioned to the same schedule (albeit 7-7 with 12 - 12 floaters) years ago and the troopers would never go back. They haven't authorized it for supervisors yet, though. It actually works better and requires less manpower to be effective, some of the local agencies have switched as a result of our success with it. A second job is just that and his allegiance should be with his primary occupation and his people. The guys here like the new schedule for secondary employment because they know years in advance what their scheduled days off will be. |

We work the same schedules listed above and we have 3 shifts. Day shift 6am-6pm, Swing Shift 3pm-3am, Night shift 6pm-6am. With each schedule you stay on that shift for one month, then switch. So 1 month days, 1 month nights, 1 month swings...and then back again. You can also shift swap with others who want to work days and you want nights. I can't see switching every week from days to nights..thats hard on a body. It's nice to plan on having every other weekend off. Days off during the middle of the week are nice for your extra curricular activites, hunting, fishing etc. |

We work the same style but we work the same schedule every other weekend off but you are on a platoon for 6 months. It is based on seniority. If your junior you kinda get it in the shorts it you don't want to work midnights. I am glad we don't do the changing every time you start back from your break. It jack me up and I'd never know if I was coming or going.

| Working a small department sucks for days off. I've worked the same shift Thursday-Monday nights since May 5th, 1999. The only 3 full weekends I've had off since was due to surgery. I get one Sunday a year off with enough begging so I can go to deer camp for the Monday opener. I know my schedule until 01/24/2020 - the day I retire. |
| We're told up front that any second jobs have to be approved by our admins ahead of time, and that if any conflict with our primary job, the primary job wind by default. The only thing they can't mess with is my military time, although they've tried to mess with that in the past. |
| We have a permanent midnight and the other two shifts rotate every 28 days. We work 6 on and 2 off with your days off rotating forward. When your week ends come it works like this. You are off Friday and Saturday for one week, Sunday and Saturday for the next and Sunday and Monnday for the following. You get two 3 day weekends every 6 weeks. We currently work an 8.5 hour day |
