| Any FF or LEO get an online Homeland Security or similar degree? Looking for a Bachelor's. I know there are a few, such as American Military University, but I don't know if it is worth the paper that it is printed on. I tried looking on FEMA and USFA websites, but couldn't find any. Thanks in advance, and sorry if this has been covered before. |

Unfortunately most of the online resources are behind the DHS firewall
http://kc.fema.net is the most used one. Get some course lists from EMI in Emmitsburg, and the Noble Training Ctr. in Anniston, and see if your dept / agency will let you go.......... FLETC may offer some courses that interest you as well..... |

Are you referring to Emergency Preparedness, or Emergency Management or the like type degree programs?
No. UNT has an Emergency Management degree, but it is not online. I may end up doing that anyway. I know Texas A&M has a Masters in Homeland Security and it is online. |
| That degree would be best if it came from a reputable school. Check the accreditation of school first. Texas A&M one would be fine but others....that you never even heard of but just started advertising online. I would stay away from. Just like University of Phoenix...a lot of their bullshit courses dont transfer anywhere else...so you are wasting a ton of money and if you decide to change schools...you are stuck with bad credits- that cost a whole lot of money. |

I did the Homeland Security Studies graduate certificate program through Michigan State. Three Masters-level classes, taken in any order - 2 of the 3 are always being offered so it doesn't matter when you started.
Total ass kicker. The program is run through MSU's criminal justice program, and is damn rigorous. I easily put in 15 hrs a week, taking one class at a time. On the bright side, I had zero trouble transferring my credits to my current MA program (could have stayed at MSU but went elsewhere on very good terms), and the classes were very helpful in my current gig as a supervisor. When I got stuck rewriting the city's all-hazard plan, I pretty much got some input from the FD/EMS side, then took our prior plan, ran it through some templates from one of my MSU classes, and bango. Much easier than starting all over. |

For the time invested, don't waste it. |
