Got the idea from someone else in the patrol rifle pic thread...
That is my dream job, so lets see what you got! Let me rephrase that, lets see your pooches! |

Harrison K9
Browse around the site. Some interesting video and photos. Be sitting down though, the sticker shock will give you a heart attack! |

One of my favorite videos.
The dog's name is "Blitz" and he has since retired. I think he lives up to his name. One of the better K-9 teams in North Texas. They found a bunch of people. Blitz Apprehension |
| I had great aspirations of becoming a K-9 officer. My chief was for it and I had a great GSD from Dutch and Belgian working lines, but the town council was a PITA. I did work with my boy in Schutzhund though. There are pics and video taken from training and trialing here. |

Great looking dog! Is he a working dog? |
Man I would love to have a dog that liked having his picture taken. My Malinois is 4 and would eat the camera. I can't tell you how many cell phones he has destroyed. He's from Holland and one nasty boy. Tops the scales at 90-95 and all muscle not an ounce of fat. We think he might have just a little Dane in the blood lines. Keep those pics coming I will try to get one of him in action on a bite suit.

Is the term mallethead, in reference to malinois, a widely known term? I have heard two handlers down here(when on my many ride-alongs - I'm basically a professional ride-along ) use that term. Of course both were working GSD's.

Malinois = Maligator or Malinut where I work. Crazy Mofo's. Gotta love them though, most are all business and high drive. This is what our guys refer to them as around here also. I have always owned GSD's but I snatched this malinois up quickly. I agree that the mallys are definitely all business and have a very high drive. I am really impressed with their speed and leaping ability. First time I saw my dog hit the handler in the bite suit, I knew I was gonna take him. Handler was 6'3" running at full speed. Hit him high on the shoulder and the dogs momentum flipped the dog over the handlers shoulder whipping the handler off his feet. Dog never lost the bite. I was almost afraid he was going to hit the neck or head. He was a bit young and green at the time and have continued to develop his bite work despite being a family oriented dog. He has been an outstanding family pet, but for anyone considering one for a family pet, they are definitely not the best dog for your average pet owner. |

It's always an adventure. |

I was watching K-9 Cops(my favorite show on tv!) on Animal Planet and the St. Paul PD have all GSDs exept one that is their bomb dog which is a malinois. In one episode after the handler ran him through the training he was tossing the toy up in the air and the dog was jumping and catching it in mid air. Probably just as high as yours. It's crazy, I don't think I have ever seen a dog jump as high as that. |

All of the dept's are here use SUVs for their K-9s, is this a much better platform than a crown vic? Is the only real advantage the size it offers inside?
Quoted:
Each officer usually has one patrol and one detector dog. How many handlers do you have? That seems really expensive! Also you guys are failing this pic thread!! |

The SUV's are awesome for hauling all our gear around, I wish our PD would buy them for us. The crown vic's are fine and we get the job done in them. Quoted:
Each officer usually has one patrol and one detector dog. That is a little differnent. Each handler runs two dogs? Or is the unit a two man unit with a split kennel and two handlers / two dogs? Why not cross train the patrol dog in narcotics or bomb? |

Here is my new partner "Rocky." Just turned 2 in Dec. 08.
Dual purpose...he looks skinny in pic because that photo was taken in Alabama during the summer heat and working out 5 days a week. I spent two months at this school and its where we currently get our dogs. Nothing but good things to say about Ricky Farley and his school. http://www.alcanine.com/

Performance is nowhere near a crown vic. You can jump curbs, go off roading, and have a bunch of room for your gear though. The A/C is a major benefit. 18 handlers and 3 supervisors. The cost for an expedition is less than double of a crown vic, Try and get two dogs into a crown vic though! The dogs get used enough in patrol work, the dual purpose concept was faded out. The same goes for the bomb dogs..... long search and they are done for awhile. |
| Has anyone seen the video of a police K9 jumping over a car at full speed and taking down a perp after he had just fired a few shots at the police. It appaers he goes right for the perps throat and just knocks the dog shit (no pun intended) out of the guy. It's the most incredable video of a police K9 I've ever seen. A freind of mine sent it to me and it accidently got deleted. I can't seem to find it. Great pics of your loyal partners by the way. |

Here are a couple of videos that I've seen over the years.
Already posted below K9 takedown The second one shows the shooting incident by suspect (dashcam) and the follow up with k9 track and bite. Officer survives. Shooting/K9 Euro Dog training |
| Sadly, our Interim Chief is anti K9 unit. The deputies have a mix of Sheppard and Milionis/ Maligators aka Shepherds on METH! I have the utmost respect for the K9 and handlers, they are worth their weight in gold. I would rather swallow broken glass and a 10lb jar of Habaneros than have one four-legged officer chew on me. |

What is the split in patrol / bomb dogs? 9/9? No dope dogs? |

What are the odds he makes it passed the "interim" title, and could he do away with an already established unit? |

Malinois = Maligator or Malinut where I work. Crazy Mofo's. Gotta love them though, most are all business and high drive. those two and mallethead are probably the three funniest things ive ever heard. I have a female 10 month old german shepard belgian malinois mix that i got from a local k-9 breeder and trainer and im less than pleased. I got her at 10-11 weeks for dirt cheap since he only needed the 2 males from the litter for agencies and had 3 females left. Shes wicked smart and has a ton of energy but she fluctuates off and on about being VERY skiddish in public in certain social situations. Sometimes a person will be walking down the sidewalk in my apartment and she will run right up to them and smell them and sometimes she will tuck tail and ears and run away. When she gets scared like that nothing will break her from it. Its really annoying and almost has me convinced that shes not worth investing money on with a professional trainer to teach her basic protection stuff. |

Quoted: Sorry to hear your buddy passed.and for something alittle bit differant: Atticus the bloodhound. one thing, one thing only, find people. http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/gmpd_bloodhound_airbrushed.JPG Sadly, he passed away last summer, cancer. looking for a replacement for him. He was a good looking animal. I love Blood Hounds even if they drool uncontrollably, smell a little and act as if they, even at 100 pounds, make perfect lap dogs. |

Who does this?? If you use a good distributor, they always take the dogs back. If you are referring to using dogs that are washed by federal agencies, then lots of people do. Especially small agencies trying to start up a K-9 unit. Many Chiefs in small agencies don't want to pony up the $5000 - $12,000 for a dog and can get a "washed out" dog from the feds for free. These "washed" dogs can still be very good dogs. Many are washed for minor problems that can be fixed or trained but the fed school didn't want to jack with it. |

) use that term. Of course both were working GSD's.
