This is out to all of the LEOs of arfcom:

How do you guys feel when you guys break up a college party? Are any arfcom LEOs previous fraternity men too? My fraternity constantly gets its parties stopped by the police and sometimes the officers that come and break them up seem like they are the anti-fun. I mean no disrespect to any LEOs that are truly against college parties.

Also, for the arfcom LEOs, any tips on dealing with the cops?

I have worked in a college town for the past 13 years. The same college town where I went to school (along with the bulk of our dept too). We have to break up parties all the time but our rule of thumb is that we usually do not stop or break them up with out a call on them. The exception is if the party is huge and will likley be trouble later then we nip it in the bud.

As for anti fun, I'm not (i am the cop at my dept that will dance across the room to get to the DJ both, just to make my partner laugh, LMAO, it never fails too BTW). But people have to realize that (atleast where I work) a small party is atleast 100people, so our whole shift is there, while other more important calls are stacking up etc. So if we come in and take care of the party quickly and effeciently it is out of nessecity and not because we are asses.

As for tips on dealing with us. OPEN THE DOOR when we get there, no yelling FUCK THE POLICE from with in etc. We have done search warrants on places when an incident happened and the residents refused to open the door, I have had to have the school board bring out a school bus at 3am before! Not the perfered method but when pushed....well you get the picture. If you are a frat/soroity and you make me bend over backwards you will be seeing me at your college disciplinary hearing in the future, LOL, go with the game plan and you will never hear word one about it from the school. If we tell you to clear out and cut the music do it please, We are usually too busy to be handling the same call twice in a night and the second time usually ends up ALOT less polite and alot more expensive (read Bail).

Other than that respect and common sense go along way with the majority of cops, especially those of us that police in busy college towns.

Hope this helps

I usually ask them to quiet down.  And I don't try to make an effort to ruin everyone's night as long as they keep it inside and the volume low.  Like said above, I don't look for parties to break up.  I'm usually called to them.

I will give you this tip though, tell your smart ass friends that making a statement to the effect of  "who called the gay strippers" will make me commence in operation anti-fun.

I work for a college police department and as such we sometimes have to work OT at parties, 1st Realize that we have jobs to do and bosses to answer to. 2nd don't be an ass because you will lose. EVERYTIME. 3rd, POLICE yourselves so we don't have to. If someone is doing something stupid that will attract our attention or someone elses make the stop or leave. Most of us realize that college is a time to have fun and kick back, so for the most part we cut them slack.
