| Finally got the call from my Sheriffs Dept. I have to take my physical test on thurs. Im anxious as hell. I have been waiting years for this. |
|
Quoted: For my interview tomorrow, how do i answer the "Why do you want to be an officer?" question. I dont want to use the , "I want to help change the world" Miss America answer. Help me out guys. And any other advice would be great. Thanks Steady job with a pension and good community standing. It's a reply that shows you're stable and looking for a long-term gig, and in economies like this it's not a hard sell. Bon chance, mon Frère. |
Good luck in your journey.
Aside from the advice offered in the tacked post, I can add don't answer the question "What would you do with a suspect who has a warrant and tells you he isn't going to be arrested?" with: "I would ask him again and then kick him in the yam-bag if he gave me lip"* *actual answer |

There is nothing wrong with adding that you have always wanted to be a cop since you were a kid. It will show that you have a goal to obtain along with a passion backing it up. I would also add things that you have done in your life to help you achieve that goal. ie, getting good grades, taking firearms classes, college, staying physically fit, martial arts, etc. Basically what I am getting at is when ever they ask you a question, have examples in your life where you have accomplished or learned something about yourself. Doing this will set you head and shoulders above the other applicants. |

Congrats, sorry to hear it, and congrats.
"Bombed" is apparently a subjective word in this case. While you may not have liked your performance, they apparently saw something in there they liked. Hang in there, depending on how in depth they get, you may be hanging in limbo for a couple weeks waiting on the background stuff to come back.

Bombed= not to well
It was in front of a 5 person review board of all the higher ups, so i was nervous. But like you said they called me so they must have liked it. They earlier in the day that if they werent interested they would not call back for background check. Takes up to much time and effort. |

Might be a lost cause, but I'm stubborn. |

Well fellas they offered me a job inside the walls. I was a little dissapointed but i was up against former LEO and others with better resumes.
I was told they give the Correctional Officers first dibs on the Deputy jobs as they come open. They have been hiring a few every 2 to 3 months, so I hope I wont be inside to long. Had to get my foot in the door. Thanks for all the help and encouragement for you guys. |

Around here it's the SO that is the crappy job, and most guys that have trouble getting hired in the town PD's go there first. Deal with the BS and Politics for a couple of years, test, and then jump to a Better job with your Academy cert already done. Good Luck, and hopefully you wont have too long a wait. |
| The jail can be a good place to start but be very careful about the reputation you get. You want to work hard, be a team player, don't complain, and respect your supervisors. If you get a jacket as a whiner or not a team player you'll find it very difficult to move to the road. |
|
You need to ask your Sheriff. It may be legal in your state, but if your Sheriff doesn't allow it/back it up you could be screwed.
Good Luck also. I am in the same boat as you. Luckily we've got our feet in the door and there are three guys retiring at the start of next year at my dept. |

We just got a new Sheriff and hes pretty bent on having the best team, the old Sheriff hired a few folks before he left that i dont think are going to make it to long with the new guy. So it might not be to long for me to get on the road, but i do want the experience inside the walls though i think it would help. |

I would advise you get a CCW. Not all Sheriff's Offices hire into the jail to start off with. The Sheriff's Office I work for makes a distinction between the D.O.s and the LEOs. Our Detention Officers are not sworn and are not permitted to carry a sidearm at anytime on the job. Our office in the past used to staff the jail with deputies, but that has long since ceased. I think you made the correct decision to take the job as a Detention Officer in order to get your foot in the door. Now bust your ass and show them how bad you want to be a deputy.
I think being a Deputy is much better than a Police Officer. Having been an officer and now a Deputy, my experience has been that a Deputy around here gets a lot more respect than an officer. Why? Because the local PD has a reputation for not really being community friendly. Just remember, you work at the leisure of the Sheriff. He can fire you at any time, for any reason. Good Job, and Good Luck. -REAPER2502 |

I had to go chat with the Sheriff and the Major today. It was the best interview so far. Both are pretty cool to talk to and were straight up with you, no bush beating with those guys. I have always worn a nice shirt and tie and today was no different and the Sheriff complemented me and said he hope i wear my uniform that way. He said he appreciates it and lets him know im serious. He told me to work hard and be a team player, and he would do what it took to get me out on the road. Thanks to all of you for the support and help. |
