Teenager surrenders in Oak Park police slaying
BY DAN CORTEZ • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • December 28, 2008 A 16-year-old wanted in the shooting death of an Oak Park police officer has turned himself in, police said. The suspect, 16-year-old Jonathan Belton went to a police station, the former 2nd Precinct station in Detroit shortly after 3 p.m. No information was immediately available about charges. A news conference is scheduled for 4 p.m. The teen is accused in the shooting of Oak Park police officer Mason Samborski, 28, a four-year veteran of the department. Samborski made a traffic stop around 12:30 a.m. near the intersection of 10 Mile and Greenfield roads. He took Belton to an address at a nearby apartment complex in connection with an investigation. A struggle between Samborski and Belton ensued in a hallway of the apartment complex and the officer was fatally shot, Oak Park Lt. Mike Pinkerton said. Police are not saying whether Samborski was shot with his own weapon, but the officer’s weapon was reportedly not recovered at the scene by officers who responded to the shooting. Pinkerton said he could not confirm that information. It remains unclear what led Samborski to take Belton to the apartment complex. No other parties are being sought in connection with the incident. Samborski was married and had one child. Oak Park Mayor Gerald Naftaly said he received word of the shooting around 1:45 a.m. and hasn’t slept since. Several residents have called after they heard about the shooting. “I was very saddened when I got the call early in the morning,” he said. “(Samborski) was very young. One of our former public safety directors used to say there is no such thing as a routine traffic stop.” Naftaly added that a sergeant will work with Samborski’s family over the next several weeks. By noon, messages were already posted on Facebook about the incident. A woman with the screen name “Victoria Belton” said she was “so hurt,I luv my bro and i hope u ok where ever u at.” A page under the name of “Jonathan Belton” could not be viewed, although there was a picture of a man matching the description of Belton making an unidentified symbol with his hands. The page lists Belton as a student at Cody High School in Detroit. Samborski is the first Oak Park officer shot and killed in the line of duty since Henry Wolf was shot and killed during a traffic stop May 21,1973. The city has a plaque dedicated to Wolf at the city offices. Funeral arrangements are pending. Perp: Cop: Link |

RIP brother.
He worked for a dept about 30 miles from mine. Hopefully the 16year old is caught soon and brought to justice. ( I should have read the posted story, I was going off info I had prior, looks like suspect turned himself in). Just FYI Facebook is a great tool. I tracked a guy that I was looking for for homicide by facebook. Like will get getting charges on 2 others for aiding/accessory after fact type charges. J- |

He is 16 so hopefully he gets charged as an adult. We routinely get 15 and 16 year olds charged as adults on much more minor stuff. Hopefully the Oakland County Pros steps up and does the right thing. J- PS make sure you sign the petition for death penalty for cop killers in michigan. Unfourtunately I have only ever seen them in person (not on line). |

I'll second that.
I don't know the victim, or his family. But givin the chance I would personally torture that 16 year old to death without hesitation. Its cases like this that PROVE just how far down the spiral this country has gone. 16 year olds kill cops for fun because rap artists teach them its cool and our media & legal system makes excuses for the shitbags when they are caught. |

Perps mother was on TV saying she is sorry for the cops family, but people must know that others make mistakes and its not fair for her whole family to be traumitized by this mistake. Yeah I saw that and was about sick. I still can't belive that havent deceided to charge him as an Adult. When we send stuff to the prosecutor in our county (one county away from oakland) we know right then and there if they are charged as an adult. We typicically get 15 and 16 year olds charged as an adult for assaults, robberies, etc, even if they have no history, we usually dont even have to ask for it, prosecutor just does it. From what I heard this kid has a checkered past at best. I said it before, but hopefully they make the right decision on this. RIP Brother, J- |

Their charging him as an adult. Last I checked the news paper. If its up to debate. Thats rather pathetic. Of course the family is crying about it. Just imagine the officers wife and kid will have to go through. Your kid just ended a life. For what?. Their is no damn good reason. Hes a piece of shit that needs to be flushed. |
