As I have said in another post, I am a Volunteer C.O.P. (Citizens On Patrol).. Last night I went out (ridealong) with an Officer after the briefing and had a good time although very boring as far as calls are concerned. One thing I had fun doing was checking out a known drug house in the shadows on foot. We parked about a block away and hung out in an alley looking for bad guys. He let me play with the computer too adding our status.. (I know, whoop-de-do) The briefing was cool too. Got to talk about a murderer a detective just got back from interviewing in Texas. Missing persons, robberies, etc... I felt like an ass though. The Sarge was asking everyone in the room if they had any other comments before we went out. Everyone answered "No SIR" and I was so shocked he asked me I just said "No".. doh! Did I disrespect the Sergeant?

What struck me as odd though was when the officer I was with hooked up with another officer and we walked a few apartment complexes. Anyone walking by was asked for ID and a check was run on them. I have never known officers to just walk apartment complexes before. Also, while driving (graveyard shift), anyone walking was stopped and run. The officer I was with also said they (the person being stopped) could just say F.O. and walk off. He said he gets at least 5 warrant arrests a week by just stopping people like that.

We played with the radar gun too. He stopped about 20 cars and never issued one citation. He said he gives them a 10 mph over the limit allowance. Some were doing over 15 but he let them go too.

I had a blast!. Kind of a rush for this old boy. I will definately do this again!

Thanks guys for your service...Stay safe!

Do you mind saying where you volunteer?

Were I work, apartment complexes are all posted "no trespassing" and the management gives PD permission to enforce it.  Anyone can be stopped and ID'ed to prove they reside there.  That is were 95% of foot patrol happens in my city.

I don't think I'd want to do that if I wasn't allowed to carry.

It is called a consentual encounter.  Google it for more info.

Or......Fishing (Aka: trolling).  Depending on your PD.

Various communities have their own opinion about the practice.

Yeah, the officer I was with called it a consentual encounter also. I just couldn't remember the term. As far as carrying is concerned, I cant. That's why I rely on the 2 officers I was with who are both OIF Vet Platoon Leaders. I felt relatively safe.
