your boss might be a moron but hes still the one that can give you days off for insubordination...

Next time just smile and nod and walk away. If you dont piss him off he wont look for other (legitimate) things to burn you on.

Dude, he's the boss, and with all respect to your heritage you kind of have to call it what he wants you to call it.

We call it the "patrol wagon" or just the "wagon".  Very small Irish population around here.

At some point you need to remember who's writing the check.  This would not be the issue I would go to war with my boss over.  Every department has a few people who complain about everything, have a poor attitude, and infect everyone around them with a negative attitude.  Then, when they have 15 years on, decide it's time to get promoted and then wonder why they keep getting passed over.  Not saying you're one of those guys... just saying there are more important things to worry about.

I got the same lecture from my Chief several years ago.  Neither of us is Irish and I used the term Paddywagon.  The Chief took me aside and explained that I would use the term 'Prisoner Transport Van' or 'PTV' from now on so that the Irish wouldn't get upset.  He actually said that Paddywagon was an ugly and slanderous term.  I gave him the "Whatever you say, Chief." reply.

A and B

A: We called it the paddywagon or just the van.

B: But had I known that there was a discrimatory path associated with it ........ probably would have changed that. Once, one of my dispatchers referred something as "Leroying it". She was from the deep south and for her, it was a standard term ........ but her uttering it caught the attention of both myself and the chief real quick. We didn't come down harsh on her for using it, though, but told her that in the Navy, that term was unacceptable.

One learns.

I'm of Irish decent, and I guess I should be offended, but

I'm a white male, which pretty much cancels all that out.

no right to be offended under those circumstances.

Per wikipedia, the paddywagon is sometimes referred to as the 'Mother's Heart', because 'there's always room for one more'!
