I put in my application with my local FD about a month ago.  My testing and interview are on the 10th of May.  Just looking for some pointers on the PT test part.  What are typical testing areas for this test?  If you have any pointers on the interview that would be great too, although I am not to worried about that part though, its a small town and I know the cheifs and they are the ones iterviewing (I am also with the ambulance allready, i think that is a will help out that part too).  This is a small town volunteer Dept.  Thanks for your help.

Lots of places use the "combat challenge"; Milwaukee and Chicago use proprietary exams. I know the City used to use a variation of what was known as the "Evanston test" - we still do, but we added a 1.5 mile run to the end of it.

As a part of your info packet with your application you should have been given an overview of what tasks would be in the PAT; if not, <opinion> it's a piss poor setup </opinion>

Just noted that this is a volunteer shop. To be honest there are about as many physical agility tests as there are departments.

Given that this is a VFD, I wouldn't expect anything too over the top - probably see if you can tolerate a respirator (SCBA), and see if you can climb a ladder without spazzing.

To use a quote from my electrical contractor alter-ego "when in doubt, call the Authority Having Jurisdiction"... in other words - call the department (or a member) or stop by on a drill night and ask how you can prep for the test.

Good luck - let us know how it goes.

Some departments  run a training program to get candidates ready to take the actual test.
