Alright guys, seems like we have talked just about everything but the obvious- what AR do you carry on duty!  What does you set up consist of/ do you wish it was lighter?

Mine personally?
RRA w/ magpul miad grip, ctr, and caa folding foregrip.
I also added a troy ff rail and troy 40lp buis.
I use a single point sling for ease and because I can move it to my shotgun.
Also have a pentagon L2H5 (i think) and an eotech ( which is about to get sold back for my new ml3!)

All of this runs around 9.2lbs.  Kinda freakin heavy but boy it sure runs good!!!
I wish I could trim it down to 8.5lbs (maybe w/ the aimpoint) but Im not holding my breath!!!Pain in the ass to hold for long periods of time, but hey, thats why we use cover right?

Colt AR-15

4 position collapsible stock.

Surefire mounted on the side of the front sight.

Uncle Mikes 3 point tactical sling.

We should have flat top uppers but we don't.  We are not allowed to use any optics.  We do have "night sight" front sight posts but they are obviously no match for a good optic.

Also, we are issued two 20 round mags (each loaded with 19 rounds) and that's it.  DUMB.

I am not LEO, yet, but I am looking at it here in about 2 semesters.  My question is to those who have had their own personal AR and have tried to get it approved.  Are there many hurdlers or are your departments strict as to what is allowed and what is not?  I ask because I'm looking at getting rid of my mutt of an AR and picking up an LMT to have and use for many years to come.

RRA midlength with 6 POS stock, A2 upper.

Not exactly a high-frills set-up, but considering how hard we had to fight to get them, and the fact that we got them at all, they're still a blessing.  One of the downsides of working in a large department in a largely liberal city.

FWIW, I think if it hadn't been for the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, we wouldn't have them at all.

All depends on your dept.'s policies regarding long guns and bringing personal guns with you to work.  My dept. lets us carry our own shotguns and .223 cal. rifles, so long as they are not full auto.  If you are serious about getting a LMT, save up your money and try to get the stamp for a 12" upper.  Your ballistics wont be as affected as a shorter barrel ( as it will a 10.5 or shorter) and it gives you options for vehicle carry and room clearing a standard 16" wont.  I think being able to to reach out 150 yrds is about as far as a city cop may ever need to take a shot with a carbine.  Any longer and your better off with a better round!

Thats just my .02

We use the SLR15 Entry and SLR15 Commander models.  For Special Operations you can use optics of your chioce and personally deck out the rifle to your liking.  All rifles for patrol have A1 upper receivers with same plane sight apertures with the 24/7 front sight post, PRI Gas Buster Charging Handles, single point slings, ambidextrous safety selectors, Ergo grips, Sully stocks, Surefire lights, and all are equipped with several magazines of 64gr Speer Gold Dot with at least 2 magazines in a MagGrip.

Why put a Gas Buster charging handle on a general issue rifle? Wouldn't that put gas directly in the faces of left handed shooters?

I have a bushmaster 10.5 inch full auto that the department owns and I can check out, also use it on the team for entries and other stuff, but we just got authorized our personal guns as long as they meet department armorer approval,

so I'm now carrying a Superior Lower, with a VLTOR stock, Tango Down grip, RRA Tactical Midlength upper with YHM FF rail, Eotech, wilderness single point sling, and copy of a surefire 6P flashlight mounted to the rail system.  It's also got Matech BUIS.

Love it...

I just turned in my department issued LMT Defender 2000 M4 10.5" gun to carry my own.

Biggest reason is the longer sight radius and the fold down sights on mine...

Here goes:

Complete LMT Defender 2000 M4, 16 inch.

Magpul MIAD
Magpul CTR
Magpul XT panels and ladder covers all over
SEI FS, working on a Fischer can
MI rifle length FF rail
MI front sight
MI rear sight is going on my girl's 6721
Replaced with Wilson BUIS with elevation
L3 EOT 512
VLTOR LPGB
Daniel Defense Ambi sling adapter
KNS Trigger and hammer pins
Badger charge handle extender
Rocky Mountain Tactical slings x3
Botach VFG with light rail and storage cap
TLR-1
Tons of Colt/Okay 20 and 30 rounders with ranger floorplates
Tons of PMags

I'm sure I've forgot something.

Fucking tack driver and bulletproof reliability.

Been through several schools. Only jammed a few times when stock, on shitty reloads with out of spec cases. No problems ever on factory ammo.

Future plans are a newer 512 with side controls, a 4x magnifier on a flipside mount, TD or Harris BP with QD mount... The old 512 goes on my girl's work 6721 with the MI BUIS I pulled off.

Here are some pictures...

I guess writing our weapons policy helped when it came to being allowed to carry my RRA.  Our dept purchased Colt's, but alot of us went in on a group purchase through the DEA for our RRA's, so the Rock's were written into our policy by yours truly.

Oh and as for my AR.....

We use the Gas Buster Charging Handle as it is much tougher in design, as we have a few of our Officers that are hard on equipment.  I personally have not had any issues with my eyes getting blasted by any gas pressure escaping from around a charging handle and I do shoot off of both sides.  We have two of our Officers that say they are effected by the gas pressure coming back, and I am not sure if this is due to contacts or eye surgery that is possibly causing sensativity.

From everything I have read, yes- pain in the ass.  If I could afford it, I would do it in a heartbeat for the simplicity for maneuvering and getting in and out of the car.
