Anyone have any experience in starting a K9 division or anything? My agency doesn't have one, and the nearest one can take us upwards of 2-3hrs to get to us. We are in a growing parish (county) and, although I'm not on the road yet, I think a K9 unit would be very beneficial to us. I am wanting to try and start one, but I don't know where to begin getting information for writing up a proposal to present to my sheriff. If anyone has any ideas or can help, please let me know. |
| Go to the U.P.C.A. (United States Police Canine Association) web site. There is info there and I believe contact info. If you are near Baton Rouge, I know that they were with the USPCA, at least a number of years ago. I retired for 10 years ago and moved to the other end of the country, so I have lost track of contacts. Good luck! Being a handler was the best and most rewarding 15 years of my career. |

Thanks for the pointers guys, I appreciate it. I miss having a big dog around (since I moved out I haven't had a dog of my own, he stayed with my parents till they had to put him down last year). Now they own 2 sheltie's and I'm getting a golden retriever soon, and would love to be a handler as well...I think it would be fun. Thanks again. |
