I just got in with a new agency. This agency allows backup guns, but unfortunately they only allow Sigs, so I'm limited to the P232. I suppose I could go for the P239, but I think that would be a bit much to conceal. My question is, would you recommend an ankle holster, a vest holster, or something else? Off duty now I carry a PM9 in my pocket, and would carry that on duty in my pocket if they would allow it. I tried the P232 in the pocket holster, but it seems a little too long. Any other recommendations?

Vest is probably the best bet.  I have a P239 but I am unable to comfortably conceal it in a back up role.

While I am a huge fan of the Sig pistols, they really aren't the best choice for a 2nd gun.

Perhaps a policy change push is in order.

I do plan on petitioning them to let me carry my PM9, but I'm just a pimple on the butt of society, and it's a pretty big department, so I can't imagine my input will make the difference.

Not to mention I haven't even started there yet. I don't want to show up bitching about not liking this or that. I think the standard is a week before you can start bitching

Edit: Any recomendations on a good vest holster for a P232? This is the only one I could find: Vest holster

My absolute favorate place to cary my backup is on the inside of my left ankle. I feel like I can draw it with either hand from almost any position. Spend the money on a really good holster though, its worth it. Right now I'm using a Don Hume and like it. I cary a Smith Airweight thugh and don't know if your 232 would feel too big. A G27 was too heavy for me.

I carry a G19 on my inside left ankle in an uncle mike's ankle rig... it goes over my boot, so it's very secure and I can really tighten down the strap to keep it in place.

I also have a vest holster on an elastic belly band, but it tends to slide down after 4-5 horus of wear and if I have to run it really drops down a bit, I much prefer the ankle holster for ease of wear, even though it might take a little longer to get to it...

How are the other officers in your new agency carrying their backup Sigs?

Not sure, I haven't started yet. My first day there will be the 24th. Were I work now, backups aren't allowed.

I carry my G27 on the inside of my lefty ankle. to me, it's not to heavy, i just wish the G27 was a little thinner. I use a "bootlock" ankle holster. (galco or g&g i believe) you lace your bootlaces through it and it has a thumbreak. very, very secure.

Uncle Mike's makes a vest holster I have been using with great success for over 5 years now. For me, vest carry is a much better option than ankle carry.

Desantis Vest Holster

it will fit up to medium/compact sized pistols.

i carry a S&W 6906 in it and several friends carry S&W 3913 or 908 models.

unlike the picture, you wear it under the vest straps.  very secure.

No matter what you get make sure you take it to the range to test it for real world use.  I have about 6 holsters in my trunk that i have decided will get me killed if i bring them out on the street. (I would probably get better mpg if i took them out)

Buy a SIG 230 .380 and put corbons in it. Or don't ask don't tell don't show.

I ordered the uncle mikes holster, and it doesn't work very well for the P232, so I'm sending it back. I wish desantis made one for this pistol, but according to thier web site, it's Glocks and J frame Smiths only. I'm going to try the one I listed earlier, and if that doesn't work out, I'll go with an ankle holster I guess. Does anyone carry in the pocket on duty? I carry off duty in a pocket holster, and was thinking of going that way. I do see that it has some disadvatages, like it would be very difficult to draw with the other hand, but I am so used to having it in my pocket already I thought it might work for me.

How well does that work?  I can wear my G27 with shoes, but I think it'd look like I have a tumor if I strapped a holster over the outside of my boot.

well, like i said, i wish it were a little skinnier. i am not convinced that this is the best place to carry a BUG, but i figure it's got to be better than nothing at all. if i am standing up, it's not visible unless you're looking for it carefully.
sitting down, it shows, and you have to make sure the pants legs doesn't bunch up. i am going to look into other carry methods, like maybe a good, secure vest holster.....

re-read my original post above.

unless your SIG P232 is bigger than a S&W 6906, it will work just fine.

the Desantis and Uncle Mike's vest holsters are simple synthetic holsters that are not hard fitted for certain models.
