Yeah,

- Be prepared for some good-natured ribbing
- You are not a "Hero".  You are just doing what you love.  Let the media play that game.
- Have a "willing to learn" attitude.  You DO NOT know everything and you never will.
- Get ready to sweat.  It feels good to work hard sometimes.
- Have some fun and lots of it.
- Have some fun and lots of it.
- Have some fun and lots of it.
- Get it???
-  Oh, try and get some gear that fits right.

At some point, you will probably realize that you will do just about anything for your Brothers and Sisters.  It is an amazing feeling.

I'm not FD but work alongside them at accident scenes. Have fun, stay safe, work hard, and kick some ass!

-Keep your mouth shut(but dont be afraid to ask questions)
-Your ears open
-Learn and train hard, and realise that the training and learning never ends.
-Dont expect to get alot of actual fire. My dept runs around 200 fire runs and 450 EMS runs a year, and it has been probably 2 years since we have had a working structure fire in district(BIG dry streak). Depending on how your department operates, the biggest things you will do is car accidents and EMS.
-Dont get all upset when they rib on ya, infact usually it just means they like you.
-Dont be afraid to get away from the pager every now and then.
-Have FUN! FD will probably be one of the most meaningfull and fun things you will ever do with your life. You will make friendships that will last a lifetime. You may even be one of the lucky ones who gets to make a career out of it.

As others have said, you have got to have thick skin to work on this job.  In time you'll be giving it back as good as the guys are giving it.

Have fun and remember that this is one of the best jobs you can have

The advice the others gave above is sound advice . . .  Take it to heart . . .  and you will be rewarded with some of the greatest bonds of brotherhood known to mankind.
