Greetings,

I am looking to upgrade my handcuffs from S&Ws to Hiatts. Hiatt makes a slightly oversized hinged cuff that are aluminum. Does anyone have any experience with these cuffs?

Thanks.

Personally, I wouldn't use alum cuffs. I've witnessed a perp breaking a set of chain S&W's years ago. He was a big boy, and should have had two sets used.

My roommie has two pair of Ti cuffs that he paid $75 each for, but the dept won't authorize them for duty. I'd get them myself, but MCSO doesn't authorize them either, when I get hired.

Titanium would be a better choice, if your dept allows them.

If you are interested, I'll see if roomie wants to sell them or not. If you want more info, PM me.

Yeah, American Handcuff used to make the ultralite titanium cuffs, but they went out of business a couple of years ago...  I understand that ASP bought the company, but I haven't heard any word of them producing any more of the ultralites...  Probably because they want to sell more of their crappy plastic cuffs.

I have a set of couple of set of American Handcuff Co., Model A105 Aluminum handcuffs.

I got them for times when I was required to have handcuffs (during Executive Protection details), but the likelihood of actually needing to use them was very small.

I would not use them for anything other than off duty carry (due to light carry weight and slim chance of use) or where you want or need to have them just in case and need something light weight.  I would not use them for everyday duty usage.

I think the American A105 model is now discontinued.

Does someone make titanium handcuffs???  That might be a good way to go for strength and light weight.

Hiatts make high carbon steel handcuffs.

Meaning they use very strong steel.

I confirmed with my roommate that these are the American Ti handcuffs.

They are nice and light, but I can't use them for duty myself. They are not authorized for him or I.

He's willing to part with them if you are interested. These are way better than the ASP plastic molded things they sell now.

I had heard there was a security issue with the ASP cuffs. Is that rectified now?

rtech,

I sent you an IM about the cuffs.  There was a problem with the ASP cuffs, but it is now fixed.  If ASP cuffs have a yellow double lock indicator they are the new design, if it is red they are the original models.  The problem revolved around them being incredibly easy to pick.  There are a couple of videos out there somewhere.

+1. The new ASP cuffs (yellow lock indicator) are an improved design that fixes the flaw that allows them to be easily picked. I have heard of no new problems with the improved design. They are extremely light and have a very smooth action, but they are a little bulkier than most handcuffs, making it an issue if you need to conceal them. I use them and love them....
