Can anyone gimme a run down on leather helmets? I've only ever had my issue Cairns 1010 but would like some traditional leather for x-mas. What's the difference between the Sam Houstin and New Yorker? thanx. |

New Yorker - typically has Bourke flip down eye protection. Sam Houston - has a flip down full face shield. Not sure if it has a full polystyrene liner or not, but that's the biggest problem with the "new generation" leathers. With the NFPA required impact liner, they're much bigger than our forefathers' leathers. ETA - Note the red sections - they both claim impact caps. ![]() From the Cairns (now MSA) website: The New Yorker: ![]()

New Yorker- Not NFPA approved Houston N6A- NFPA approved Both can be had with ESS goggles,Bourkes or Shield just what you want to spend. My Department requires all personal gear (boots, gloves helmets etc) to be NFPA approved before you can wear it on the job. That goes for both department and personal purchases. That leaves the N6A our only Cairns choice. I wear a Conway Leather and it has held up pretty well for the last 6 years. It was a Little cheaper than the Cairs but it is lighter. It's all personal preference!! go to The Firestore and they have just about all the helmets out there and decent pricing. |

Sam Houston is a little wider, where as the New Yorker is a bit taller. OSHA or NFPA approved or not, whatever your department "lives by" should be concidered......here its either. Chances are if something falls on your head, its whats holding your head up that will suffer. |
