I've seen a few, even considering getting added to the meat tag on my chest.  Just wondering what you guys think of them, and if you have not seen one, would you honor it when you come across it.

Both times I've seen it, I called Medical command, got the same Doc both times, his answer both times, " if its written on his skin, I guess he's serious.  Cont BLS but do not defib or intubate, C-ya when you get here".

Maybe our protocols are different here (upstate NY) but only an official DNR form is considered valid. Handwritten notes, tattoos, etc don't count.

I'm talking from an EMS perspective, maybe doctors see it differently?

If the "DNR" was pinned to his skin through a piercing,  yes.    "DNR" tattoo'd, no.

Docs can usually call for whatever reason they feel like resuscitation shouldn't be continued.  However, they are the ones that get to be liable for it.  Here in TX, only an official DNR is good enough to call the code without calling med control.  Generally med control will call the code for things like family requests, tatoos, etc.

Unless it's an original w/docs signature...  It's just another piece of paper.

Had a suicide write "Do not rescuitiate" on his chest with a red Sharpie.

How long do you think he stood in front of a mirror doing that?

Thats what ahppens here in Pa.  A tattoo is not good enough for you to stop with out calling Med command.  But the doc can call it while en route, or say continue with BLS measures only.

Thanks for the responses, I always like to here opinions from others ini the industry.

Stay safe.

i'm highly allergic to penicillin and i wear a medic alert bracelet...actually i never take it off.  i found out the hard way and have often thought about getting it tattooed to my body b/c if i do ever receive penicillin again the chances of me "pullin through" are slim to none

Now THAT would be worth the tatoo on both forearms.

That would be part of a standard "meat tag". Includes blood type and allergies (PCN for penicillin, or NKDA for no known drug allergies). I've thought about getting one.
