How often do the guys in your departments get to the range and practice with their weapons? I'm not necessarily asking how often YOU shoot. You guys are gun nuts, so I would expect that you would get to the range more often than your coworkers. But how often would you say that most people that you guys work with fire their weapons? |

Quals ar 4x per year. One is a fromal qualification, course of fire, timed, all that jazz. The others are "skills evaluations" which are pretty much one time things and can be anything from standing and shooting, to a variety of force on force, and shoot house excercises. Every Monday is "open range". The range is open all day for practice, and 100 rounds are given for free. Some are out there 2-4 times per month. Some are out there 1 time per month. The majority don't take advantage of the open range. |
Quite often. Dept range, free ammo, and your paycheck is tied to the quarterly quals. Rifle carriers go through a 2 day Mini- class for qualification. Don't pass (or miss part of the class) and we take away your rifle.Add to that shotgun and LTL certification and you start to see a LOT of range time. Don't show up regularly and your supervisor gets a nastygram. |

I'd say the majority of the people I work with only shoot enough to qualify. When they actually go to shoot, the do so fairly well, however. There are a a group of officers that enjoy shooting or hunting, but the majority of them are on the quick response team or something along those lines. |

Dang I voted once a week from reading the title. My unit shoots a minimum of once per week as a division and as teams or individuals probably twice a week minimum. Some more than that depending on work load. Nice having no budget in regards to ammunition. However, departmentally, there are far too many that shoot only once a year for qualification. Sad but true.

| We qualify twice a year, and have an open range day once a month (usually, 10 times a year), where you can shoot to your heart's content with free FMJ (to a point). I'd say about 10% of the PD comes to the open range day. I don't miss them, plus I shoot a couple IDPA matches on my own each year. |

Per policy we have to qualify quarterly. We shoot our basic qualification and must get a 100% score to pass. It is timed and incorporates movement, draw and reloading at each stage. Once done with that then we move on to either combat, accuracy or technique courses. Each has its own qualification standard. Two if the 4 ranges are shotgun and two are rifle and two of them are at night (1/2 the department works at night so 1/2 of the ranges are at night.) The department runs two additional pickup ranges each year that can be a mix of anything. Every course of fire is a qualification in and of itself. All officers are required to clean their guns at the end of the range before leaving. We also have a use of force briefing or a profile of an officer involved shooting before each range session. |
