I'm doing a ride along with the department i'm applying to in the next week or so.  What's appropriate attire for me to wear?
Shorts and polo? Suit and tie? ninja suit with combat boots?

I always just wore nice jeans and a shirt with a collar.

I opt for the ninja suit.

Actually just ask whoever you cleared the ride along with.

I prefer any I have to wear nice casual wear.  Something like dockers and a polo or button down shirt.  Out of habit I prefer they don't wear ties but it's not my neck.

In theory you should be staying out of any knockdowns anyway

Our interns and ride alongs can normally go with us out of the car unless it gets crazy.  I always tell them to wear something dark colored.

+1.

And whatever's below your waist should be worn bloused.

Wear something that will make a great first impression, especially if your applying for the agency your riding with.  Good luck and be safe!

Check with the department.

I did a ride along with an officer I trained.  He moved on to another department.

I wore a dress shirt, dress slacks and a sports coat.  Everything matched and I looked "Marvelous".

I didn't wear a tie.  His supervisor commented on me not wearing a tie.  He almost didn't let me do the ride along.    The supervisor knew I was a L.E.O./F.T.O..

I did a ridealong with an agency I considered switching to (but didn't) a few years ago, and wore khakis, a clean button-down long sleeve shirt, and clean hiking boots.  Badge in my pocket and vest under the shirt.

That or slacks should be just fine.

Some don't allow shorts.

Nice slacks and a polo should work fine anywhere.

Dockers are fine too.    Avoid the 5.11's or anything that screams,  I'm so tacticoool.

Nothing flashy, nothing ratty,  Sgts. will make mental notes.

WTF? What a retard. Requiring a tie...on a ridealong...[shakes head]
