Taking my EMT-B written exam Monday/17th.  Took the practical in January.  I've got a pretty good handle on it just wondering if anyone had any advice/suggestions.  Thanks, Alex

Study Those that did not have at least 50-60+ hours into self study failed.

Don't read into the questions.

The last few NREMT tests around here had a 30-35% falure rate.

I used http://www.knightlite.com/ EMT-B software and got a 98 on my Written.

The best thing to study is the children, peds, and OB.

Thanks for the advice.  I've been studying about two hours a day for quite some time now.  BSI/scene safety, right? Heh I guess I'll post an update after the test Monday.  Wish me luck, Alex

Is it the NREMT-B?

Stick to the basics.  Don't read too much into the questions.

Yes, NREMT-B and after that I guess I just apply for my MO state license.  I've heard that there are many questions with multiple correct answers as choices, the trick is to choose the most correct answer.  I just need to take my time and read all the answers all the way through.  Heh a little refresher for some of you older guys: SLABOCAB

Secure C spine
Level of consciousness
Airway
Breathing
O2
Circulation
Arterial bleeding
Bare the chest/body

I'm not familiar with that one.  I let my NREMT lapse several years ago as it is not recognized as a stand alone cert in UT or NV where I work.  I teach it a little differently than that mneumonic.

Oh BTW, here's a refresher from an old-school guy to an up-n-coming guy:

EDTCDDCCDTM.

Eat the last bite.
Don't run to the truck.
Turn the damn siren off already, it's 3AM.
Check the Patient's hands.
Don't worry, it's not Your blood.
Don't kneel in blood, vomit, amniotic fluid. Just don't.
Cockroaches will wash-out of kid's ears w/ a 60cc syringe filled with saline, usually.
Carry a small Surefire light....w/ you, even in the daytime.
Don't forget the ID cards and shoes.
They guy who is bagging doesn't have to lift or carry.
Make sure your partner puts the strecher back in the truck before leaving the hospital.

I see a whole new thread developing here!

Hehe.  I learned the hard way on one of my first rides....."Yea sure I know how to do compressions"  I learned that CPR is quite different in the back of the bus than on a floor in a classroom.

Of course.  I took the practical half of the exam on January 7th.  My stations were a trauma assessment, oral/nasal airways and suction, spinal immobilization seated pt.(Kendrick extrication device) and a joint immobilization(shoulder, with a sling and swathe).

Been a few yaers since I took the test but this was true then!

Also, studying may or may not help. I didn't study and passed on the first try. But what Shrike9 said about reading into the questions is very important. Take what they give you.

Have they gone to computerized testing yet? The last NREMT  newsletter I got said they were headed the way.

Tag, Im going through an EMT-B course this summer,

I took the FR NREMT back in October I think, it wasnt bad but it was harder than I expected. I would expect EMT to be a bit harder. Just remember it doesnt test how good you are at EMS, it tests how well you take a test.

Don't rush. Read the questions closely but don't read into them. What I ended up doing (and I passed on the first try), was taking the test twice. Once to write down the answers, the second time, I put my answer sheet aside, and checked that if I read the question closely again, I got the same answer as I wrote down. There's always a couple that you'll go back and think to yourself, "Now I see what they mean here."
Other than that, get a good night's sleep before and remember, BSI, SS, Initial assessment/impression/ABCD.

Oh, when I took it the OB section was kinda tough.

You think you're going to make money doing this?

The practical made me a little nervous but you gotta think; this is the same stuff I will use to treat real people, just treat as if it were a real situation and forget about the evaluators.  Written test wasn't too bad.  Go to nremt.org and they have a layout of the written test.  It's 150 questions and on the NREMT website they tell you how many questions are focused on each subject.  Easy as pie.

I finished my practical last saturday, Passed everything except Long bone splinting
So i need to get signed off by two of my EMT-I's , But I do not need to drive 1.5 hours back to the place where the practicals were held to complete it! so that made me happy.

I go for my written on May 5th, a day before my 18th Birthday, so i get to take the "easier" State's Exam

My NREMT-B lapsed, seems the Registry has no sympathy for not finishing your recert hours, not even the fact you were deployed for 18 months. Fuck em, my state cert is still good and I don't plan to move.

Congratulations on passing your test!
