My bro and his wife are both LEO in London Uk and I respect totaly their comitment and I'm proud of my bro doing a tough job with his positive attitude in tough and trying times. We have many names that the Police are called...from "Pigs" to "Peelers" Robert Peel the founder of the UK Police system ensures that UK Police can be known as "Bobbies" or "peelers" amongs other unpleasant names. I know the root to the JBT thing But where does the Po-Po thing come from? I hope this is not a dissrespectfull question because it is not meant that way. Thanks guys If it is a Ghetto slang...what is is bourne/derived from? Just interested is all. Bobby/Copper/Peeler/Pig/Law/Rozzer/Five"O"/JBT/Dog Exterminator  ....I know how most of these came about.But PoPo leaves me guessing Taffy ETA I mean no dissrespect at all to LEO's. I thank you for your service just as I would thank the/our military. |
I have also heard that copper comes from NYPD having Copper badges. I do not know the veracity of this, however. |

Incase no one responded to "peelers" it comes from Sir Robert Peel the "father of policing." I think he started the first orginized policing standard in early England. "Bobby" is short for robert and thats where they also get the word "Bobbies." "Peelers" is a little more obvious...its sir robert peel's last name. Ya'll leos correct me if i am wrong.

Thanks Taffy I don't know the difference between a trooper and a policeman Anyone care to educate me? Here we have Police....and more Police. We have dedicated dog/gun/bike/horse/traffic etc ...police men/women but they are all police with pretty much the same powers. Traffic do have piss taken a lot though....sat on their asses all day. And Beat Officers (foot-patrol) get called wooden tops....dunno why. Those carrying guns have more power though |
"COP" originated due to the copper buttons worn on uniforms (actually it was "Coppers" but had been shortened to "Cop"). All other derivatives since then, such as Constable on Patrol, Community Oriented Policing, etc. all were named so as to fit with the "COP" nickname. It's probably the same reasoning behind POLICE being shortened to "PO-PO". It's called slang, and nobody knows where words are born. People just begin using them. |
Well the story I hear is that one day a bad guy was resisting and was being subdued and he was trying to say POLICE but the stick to the solar plexeus only allowed him to say PO (stick) OHHHH then tried to say it again PO (stick) OHHHHHH. Who knows. maybe some guys infant couldn't say daddy is being hauled off by the POLICE and could only say PO PO |
+1 on the origin of "COP".......the acronyms happen as a result of coincidence and people with alot of time on their hands..............Kinda like "PIG" standing for "Pride", "Integrity", and "Guts"

When I started 24 years ago, I got a history lesson from one who started working as a deputy in 1951. My father. He came from up north, and settled in Harris County. Before it was all Houston. "Coppers" was a derogatory term in the big eastern cities, he cited Chicago, when the police walked the beats. If someone wanted to be left alone they would toss them a copper coin. It meant you could be bought. Hence the term. The copper button is also a known historical term from the uniforms. Fuzz came from the fact that the old uniforms were of wool, and until broken in, would leave fuzzy wool. Hence, a rookie would be called a fuzz. My father recalled the day he was no longer considered a rookie- they bought him a .45 and took away the Smith .38. He worked South Texas in wool, 24-7. No AC, no portable, only his stick, slapper, and if lucky, a partner. IMHO, more balls and common sense than we see now. |

I was told in the academy cop is slang for "Constable On Patrol" like PIG was for "Pride, Intergrity, Guts"  We tease the troopers calling them "tail light chasers" and "Brown Rounds" for the Stetsons they wear. |

In California the CHP are called: CHIPS (From the 70's TV show) Choclate CHIPS if they were a black officer Chipies (slang) Triple A (AAA) with a badge and my personal favorite because they like to hang around on-ramps and swoop down on speeding motorists, like me on my way to work....heheheheheheh.....LOL "White crested ramp roosters" |
