Officer Who Lost Leg Returns To Full Duty Police Officer Injured By Drunken Driver POSTED: 8:12 a.m. EDT July 5, 2005 UPDATED: 8:12 a.m. EDT July 5, 2005 Story by Local10.com MIAMI -- A Miami-Dade police officer who lost his leg when a drunken driver crashed into him has returned to full duty. Officer Leo Fernandez stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on May 5, 2002, when another vehicle slammed into the rear of the police cruiser, pinning Fernandez between the two vehicles. Fernandez was badly injured and lost his left leg below the knee. For more than three years, Fernandez worked with Robert Gailey, an advanced physical therapist from the University Of Miami School Of Medicine. The Miami-Dade police said that because of Fernandez's persistence and dedication to therapy, he was able to return to full duty on July 4. Fernandez started his employment with Miami-Dade County as a corrections officer in1987. In March 2001, he transferred and became a police officer. The driver of the vehicle who hit Fernandez pleaded guilty and is serving eight years in prison. |

There was a Dade County Sheriff's Deputy on "COPS" a few years back with one leg. His right leg was missing from below the knee. He stopped some guy for riding his bike at night with no lights, the guy threw a crack-pipe and ran, and the (overweight) one-legged cop chased him down, cuffed him, and walked him about a half mile back to the cruiser. What a nice thing to have captured on tv. One-legged fat white cop chased down a big, tall, younger black guy. Try explaining that one while watching tv in your dayroom, Inmate. ![]() ![]()
