Detroit, the worst city in the US(at least with crime), again finds its self in the national news. Detroit Police Trainees Punished For Lax Reaction To Chief's Appearance Associated Press DETROIT (AP) -- It's a lesson 26 Detroit police recruits are getting an extra week at the training academy to think about: Salute the chief. Chief Ella Bully-Cummings recently stopped by the academy and met the recruits in a garage. It was one of the occasions in which department regulations call for uniformed officers to salute the mayor, the chief and members of the Board of Police Commissioners. "The chief came into a room and no one came to attention,'' police spokesman James Tate said. Bully-Cummings responded by ordering an extra week of training for the recruits, Tate told the Detroit Free Press for a Wednesday story. Tate didn't know what they are studying this week, but said: "The Detroit Police Department is a paramilitary organization. And if officers are not aware of the basic internal protocol, then how can they be expected to properly utilize the training that they have learned in the academy when interacting with the citizens of this city?'' The incident was a misunderstanding, said one trainee who requested anonymity for fear of losing his position. "It was not disrespecting,'' the officer said. "But it was taken as disrespect.'' An official with the Detroit Police Officers Association called the punishment "ludicrous.'' "What's the purpose of them staying another week in the academy when the citizens of the city of Detroit need help?'' union vice president Paul Stewart said. "Crime is rampant.
