...a maintenance question.  Is there anything to be concerned about with varying temperatures on a patrol rifle?  My M4 is subjected to both warm and cold every day.  I keep it clean and lubricated with Firepower FP-10 (CLP) and figure that's the best I can do.  The stuff says it won't freeze down to WAY below zero.  Any comments/suggestions?  Thanks!

The main thing I would be concerned with is condensation and freezing of said condensation.  FP-10 should be fine in that temp range.

Try not bringing the rifle indoors.

Keep it either cold or hot but not both.

labdog6 I take it you are leaving your rifle in your patrol car? You are correct about the temp changes being hard on your weapon as the temp changes will cause condensation/rust on just about any gun. I found that leaving the weapon in a soft case made things worse and leaving the rifle in the trunk seemed worse than it being up front. I would suggest a good cleaning with a wipe down of FP-10 at least every month and preferably every other week. I wipe mine down, let it set for awhile and then wipe it dry.

...a somewhat unique situation... I drive an unmarked SUV with my weapon in a case cable locked to the top of my dog's kennel, and below the vehicle's roof.  (There's just enough room to make it work, and no one knows it's there unless you really look.  Besides, the labdog advises those who loiter to move along.)  I haven't been bringing it in at night for fear of the condensation issue, but since it's in the passenger compartment it gets warm when I drive it anyway.  Even though I keep my ride parked in an attached garage in a nice neighborhood I still worry about the theft issue.  What the hell, it's a dept. gun, I'm bringing it in at night and stepping up the maintenance... I'll sleep better.

I live in frozen hell and my Colt M4 sets out in my car for long stretches.  I use CLP and have not had any problems.
