Question for all you LE/Correction Officers out there. I have an underbarrel 37mm M203 type launcher for my AR. Right now as a "civilian" I am restricted only to use smoke or flare rounds, ect. I know right now there are a variety of less-lethal loads out there in 37mm available for cops and corrections, such as bean bag, rubber/wood baton, teargas and capture nets. Right now I'm debated whether this'll be worth keeping around once I get into the LE field. Does your department even use these, and if so, to what frequency? Does it have practical application or is it do you feel it's nothing but an expensive paperweight under your rifle? |

I could be wrong but I believe the 37mm rounds from Deftech and such may have higher pressure than cobray type 37mm is designed for. As a police officer I don’t see you getting much use of your 37 mm on an AR. Pretty limited uses out there for them. They do have some ERT applications but they are pretty much limited to EDP and Riot. My department has 2 S&W 37mm gas guns. In 3 years I don’t know of them ever coming out of the locker. My vote is expensive paperweight. When I was in the service I hated the 203. Just to much dead weight that I was not real proficiant with at point targets. |

We have the 37mm..or as we call it the "1.5". Unless you work in a max..you will seldom use it. If you can practice with the 1.5..you can get pretty accurate. I hit the 8 ring on the bottom of a B-27 target with a barricade breaching round with one from 50 yards away. That was part good managment but mostly good luck! |

Your agency may not let you use it since it will probably not be an authorized weapon for duty use, besides your buddies will laugh you out of the briefing room. Policy dictates everything in Law Enforcement. |

Contrary to what was already mentioned, we use mostly 37mm with a few 40mm weapons. I the 40mm is gaining popularity, though. The USMS Special Operations Group has extensive experience with the 37mm. Some regional SRTs also have them. You name the round and we probably have it stocked. I t's a great tool. However, I would not see it being used for daily use for patrol. Ours are used for high threat entries (barricade rounds, gas, etc) and crowd control. FYI, we are not a line unit for crowd control, as we are too small. We tend to function more as an officer rescue unit. In addition to the 37mm you have not handling most currently produced less-lethal rounds, the carry method would not be encouraged by most departments/agencies. Carrying a less-lethal/lethal combo is usually frowned upon. Departments, agencies, as wellas manufacturers generally discourage carrying a less lethal in any fashion in which the less lethal and lethal weapons may be mistaken in a high stress situation. |
