1st - What's your department's policy regarding adding optics to your patrol rifle?
2nd - I'm looking into adding one of the "heads up" type dot sights to my AR.  Other than the price, I really liked the look of the C-More tactical - plus it included the standard rear sight (as a backup):

However, after reading several reviews, I'm having second thoughts on the C-more.  Any suggestions for a similar setup by a different company?
Thanks,
CR

You really can't go wrong with an Aimpoint or EOTech, if it's in your budget an ACOG is tops!(IMHO)

IIRC, you can outfit 3 rifles w/Eotechs for about the price on 1 AGOG.  Ymmv.

That's why I said "if it's in your budget"[:D]
The ACOG is OH MY GOD! expensive but thats what tax write-offs are for.

My current budget is leaning toward the less expensive (not that any of this is cheap).  What about a backup rear sight?  I'm guessing just put the optical toward the handguard end of my flat top (probably should have mentioned that in my 1st post) and maybe an ARMS or Bushmaster flip sight behind it?

That'll work just fine.

CR, avoid the C-more.  The universally suck.  Battery life is piss poor, you have to remove the sight to change the battery, the sight adjustments do not have clicks, so sighting in is a real treat.  The housing is polymer, and the dot is projected onto the screen, with the projector being that open exposed bump at the rear of the body.

Go Aimpoint or Eotech.

What's a good price on an EOTech - should I spend the extra money on the AA battery version?  Any recommendations as far as where to buy (website)?

Spend the money on the AA it is not that much more. If you dont need it to work with NVGs you should be able to pick one up for around $325 maybe less if you are getting it for your department

Any retailer suggestions?  I did a google search and found a few - but all from companies that I've never heard of.  I'm a little leery of sending that much $$$ to someone I've never heard of.

Also, I'm guessing that as long as you have the iron sight backup, your depts are okay with this type of sight.  I've heard conflicting stories in my dept (guess I should just call one of the firearms instructors and find out for sure).

Thanks for all the help,

I'm going to go with either an Aimpoint M2 or an EoTech HoloSight 552, because I need an optic that is night-vision compatible.  I'm currently leaning towards the Aimpoint, but I've heard good things about both.

You should definitely check with your department before investing that kind of money; most departments I've heard of don't have a problem with electronic sights, but you never know.  My agency's policy is that they are fine, but I have to have the ability to immediately go to iron sights if the optics fail and I have to qualify with both each time.

If you get a backup sight, go ARMS...they are spring loaded, i have seen many mechanical backups that snag on vests and the operator has no idea until he notices bullets in the floor...

I use an A.R.M.S. #40 as my backup sight and I am very happy with it.

Thanks for all the advice - I have one more question:

If I mount the EOTech on my flat top (BM shorty A3), won't the front sight be in the way?

The front sight won't be an issue if you use the sights properly and keep both eyes open while shooting.  The front sight kind of blurs out and you don't really notice it.

Also, for the best prices, you can call Kevin Wright at Kiesler's at 1-800-444-2950.  I have gotten some great LE prices from him in the past.
