Well ladies and gentleman, I was a reserve for 5 and a half years and I just accepted a paid part time position. I go to the academy in the spring of 15.

On to the dilemma, I was issued an 04 Ford Explorer and a Remington 870 and a decent rifle. The shotgun barrel was so rusted it was unusable so the dept bought me a new/used one. The previous officer built a box set up for the cargo area of the Explorer that is made of treated lumber. I have my personal rifle in there as well as the shotgun and the issued rifle. The shotgun and my rifle one in a case and one not in a case are both rusting!!!! On the daily I pull both weapons out and coat them in rem oil. The dept rifle not a spot of rust anywhere...it's such a confusion to me.
Since there is a plethora of experience and knowledge on this site, I'd like to hear other officers solution to the rust issue...

Sincerely,
Smith 94-4

Where is your rifle rusting and what rifle is it? Pictures would be good. The only time I've ever had issues with rust is one day (on my friday) it was raining and I got a few rain drops on my 870 receiver, didn't think about it and put it away for my weekend. Three days later I noticed some surface rust where the water droplets had been when I pulled it back out again. I've never had rust issues on any of my rifles.

Also... there are many better options than Rem Oil

The dept issue rifle is a dpms m4 and it hasn't rusted anywhere. My rifle has been in my soft sided case and it's an Olympic arms and only rusted on the barrel. The 870 rusted on the new/used barrel and the magazine and the receiver.

The rem oil was just what I had laying around so I threw it in the cleaning kit in thebcar until it runs out. I will take a few pics tonight when I go on duty. I was thinking it had something to do with the treated lumber being wet with whatever they treat it with...maybe the would speed rust or affect it somehow...and I though maybe it's because I live in Indiana and it's rained every day for a week now.

My Colt 6933 has never rusted. It stays in my car rain, snow, 115 degree heat, fog, humidity... etc.

I believe it's due to who made the rifle, and quality of the Parkerization, or lack thereof.

Condensation from the treated lumber. Having the rifle in a padded case that holds moisture isn't helping things either.

Clean the gun thorughly and  put a coat of  paste wax on it. Any  brand will do.
