anyone want to help me out with some ideas for a "Why I want to become a police officer" essay... It's supposed to be short but here's what I have so far: I want to become a police officer because That's as far as I have gotten...I probably have enough reasons I just can't seem to get started. |

List your reasons, prioritize them and start putting pen to paper. No on wants to put words in your head, why you're doing this is very personal. Maybe you have a bucket of great reasons. Maybe its for the gun and badge and the authority kick. It's one of those things where people may feel they're giving you the answers by posting good reasons for you. Essays usually work best when they contain personal anecdotes. Write about something you saw a cop do when you were young and how that inspired you. Remember you're selling yourself, so speak of your personality traits that will make you a good cop. Be who you are, don't brag or posture. Stress the positives and lay out how you hope to contribute/grow in a career in LE. |

First: don't start with "I wanna be a cop cuz" =-) 95% of the applicants must put something along those lines on top of their papers. If I were you I'd personalize it, "For as long as I can remember..." or "Ever since X happened I knew I wanted to ..." Anything to make it a little more interesting to the reader. I think the idea of a personal anecdote is definitely a good move, even better would be something that's not a direct link to police work that made you interested in it would be good. HTH -bill |
| Murphquake siad it best. My Lt. still remebers my personal story from my first interview. Make your story stand out. Don't lie or stretch the truth. Make it a unique or write from different angle if you can. Email it to me, I won't post it, if you it critiqued. Is this for a class? Or a job/ background packet? |

=-D thanks 7ring! Maybe i should start applying for jobs that involve essays, I suck at getting hired (not too bad at getting fired though ;-) Once I hit the interview I'm usually in the door as long as the interviewer isn't a total cock... Them: So what are your best qualities? Me: Nothing, er um i mean the ability to admit i have no best qualities, just ones that aren't my worst uhhh err yeah that? =-? Them: Why should I hire you over someone else? Me: 'cause i'm the most fun to interview and if you pay me we can do this everyday? lol... after that I like to do something fun like not show up when they ask me to start working and other smart things! -bill no wonder i don't have a job |

Well I thank you all, but murphquake is where I was haveing the biggest problem, the intro. I have always written good essays I just have a heck of a time starting them. The reason I am doing this is because I am an Explorer, it's only a few months away untill I can apply for Deputy anyway, I know I need something that stands out. |
