Have a friend about to start a EMT program and their birthday is next week. Flashlight/Headlamp or knife were both suggested but I am open to other suggestions. Hoping not to spend more than 50 bucks but that might be tough.
Bonus points if it is something I can pick up locally |

something similar to this:
multi use, solid construction knife is a must for any EMT http://www.galls.com/sog-escape-knife-with-seatbelt-cutter-and-tungsten-glass-breaker or this great for checking pupil constriction. i wish i had one http://www.galls.com/streamlight-stylus-led-penlight?PMSRCE=92350001&SESSIONID=000000060442187 like five of these. one for his POV, one in his pocket, one for his partner etc i have 17 of these babies. ive given away about 15 http://www.amazon.com/FordEx-Group-300lm-Flashlight-Adjustable/dp/B006E0QAFY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388744077&sr=8-1&keywords=ford-ex+300+lumen edited to clarify |

hepatitis shots and a gift certificate to a chiropractor surprisingly, i second this That's funny stuff right there. I thought of a penlight and like the knives. This is hard for me because when it comes to lights and knives I am a snob/gear whore but I am also a cheap bastard. If I was rolling in cash I would hook her up with a surefire L2 or Aviator and a nice benchmade but that's not gonna happen

A knife that if I dropped and couldnt find, i wouldnt cry about. They need replacement about every year, so you have to keep up on it. i dont want to drag a benchmade onto a scene and leave without it. a $10 knife is so much better to throw away than a $65+ knife eta: i can use a shitty knife 50 times before it needs replacement. I can get 100 times the use out of a good knife, i just dont want to lose it |

I've never had to use a seatbelt cutter. If you don't wanna splurge on a benchmade.... then I third the chiropractor gift card. that or a streamlight penlight, stylus pro model. That or a gift card to danner for some nice boots. I used seat belt cutters in the fire department but I have no idea if the EMS company here actually does extractions or if the FD does them. |

So Pen light or micro flashlight? Penlight Pen Flashlight Stylus Pro
I am thinking the pen light would be better for small stuff like checking pupils. The other two look like the same light but one is a single cell and one a double about 25 and 50 lumens respectively. That would be perfect for general light use and small enough for pocket carry. What do you think? Which would you use more? Also found this knife SOG rescue type knife |

I have a stylus pro that I take everywhere, on and off duty. Just enough light for most small tasks, and all on duty tasks. You can check pupils with them, but they are guaranteed to blind so I just use the outer edge of the beam and it works fine. I have several of the streamlight models, I like the stylus pro most because that bastard is solid. Mine is worn down pretty well, but works 100% and I haven't needed new batteries yet.
I also have the poly stylus, which is awesome, but the tail cap seems to be glued on and that glue is breaking free now. So go with the pro. |

check out benchmade, you should get 30% off with your FF discount. They make some nice products in the 50-70$ range, after discount.
edit: these are the shit. here Attach to key chain, jacket zipper, etc. When getting info, paperwork, refusals, looking at id's etc on the side of the road at night. Have one of those clipped to your jacket zipper or a hole in your collar and voila, hands free light. Have a couple, all still working fine after intense beatings. |

Things I wish I'd had right away:
Pen lights Flashlight Watch Warm weather socks All-weather notebook Can probably get most of these locally. |

The service should provide plenty of pen lights. We carry at least 3 on the rig in different places.
Scopes are expensive and normally get blood and crap on them. I dropped 100 for a nice cardiac lithmann scope. Used it a hand full of time but not in a few years. The cheap service provided scopes work just fine and the are disposable. Fancey knives fall out of pockets when you crawl into cars during extrication. If you do get a knife get a cheap one. I've been a medic for over 12 years I see new people with all sorts of stuff they don't need. If it were me I would like a radio holster sling. They are like 38 bucks. They fit over your turnout gear and it keeps the radio from pulling your pants down while taking a leak. Hope this helps |
